2 Ruined/corrupted/bugged games in a row!

WTF!

So I'm playing my first gigantic map. For DAYs. It crashes here and there to the point that I put autosave up to every turn and quicksave constantly. Ultimately the game completely corrupts and I couldn't finish it. I was crushing the AIs, and it would've taken forever to finish - but I still wanted to finish it.

Today I start a medium map (after reading a thread indicating that the AI is best on small/medium), and I'm having a great game, barely squeaking by, and after HOURS finally to the point of being able to declare on one of the annoying AIs. But I have to break for dinner, so I save and quit (because the game seems to crash if I leave it running for too long or crashes randomly/a lot after alt_tabbing). When I resume and load the game, it's hosed. All of my warships are invisible. They're there - I can find them eventually and they all have 43125132432/0 movement. I've reloaded multiple times, and even let a turn go (movement goes to 0/0). The game appears to be ruined and a waste of time.

I'm pretty much scared to try to play any more. It takes me hours/days to play a single game and it's not worth playing when half of my 1.6 games have cheesed out.

Core 2 Duo 6750, 3G DDR2, GeForece 8800 GTS 640MB, all the latest (official, non beta) drivers, latest Dx9, etc. I seriously doubt anything with my PC is the problem. My machine destroys BioShock and everything else with no problems. Saves from all my other games remain functional forever.

I've restarted the game several times hoping, but with no luck, so I don't think the short debug.err has anything worth reading.

What OS and specifically what version of your video drivers?

I've added a debug.err because there seems to be messages about missing files and/or textures which seems odd given that I'm fully updated via SDC, don't use mods (hmm, maybe did a graphics upgrade mod at one point but stopped using it ages ago, maybe even before DA), and haven't altered any files myself. I specifically checked on this one sincce it involves ships:

No files found matching mask C:\Documents and Settings\Paul\My Documents\My Games\GC2DarkAvatar\ShipStyles\*.xml

... look there are lots of xml files in that folder, including the one seemingly for my missing warship (V-CRUISER-02). (I even cut and pastee the path out of winexplorer into the debug.err to make sure my eyes weren't deceiving me on the path ).

All of my other ships are fine - and they're all custom designs (constructor, miner, troop transport).

I'm tempted to re-install. :-/

I think the issue is probably related to running out of process memory.  Try playing on a smaller sized galaxy or at a lower resolution until the 1.7 release comes out.

I don't know if that's the cause, I just don't see anything that looks really out of place in your debug.

If I'm running out of any kind of memory on a medium sized galaxy with 3G of RAM and 640G of VRAM, that'd be something, even if I do run 1920x1200.

I reinstalled (and deleted all my docs stuff to clean it out) but I'm only in the middle of my first game since, another medium. No invisible ships so far.

The game did lockup twice last night, requiring kills from task manager. I don't recall that happening before. I rebooted and it stopped happening.

I guess I'll run some diagnostics if I continue to have wierd problems. I upgraded my MOBO, CPU, and RAM just a few weeks ago, so maybe something isn't 100%.
