Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor

Second expansion pack coming soon...

Stardock is pleased to announce the second expansion pack to its award-winning PC strategy game Galactic Civilizations II.  The new expansion pack, entitled Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor, takes place shortly after the events of Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar and puts the player in control of one of 12 unique civilizations ranging from the humans to the evil Drengin to the mysterious Thalan.

Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor aims to greatly expand the wealth of content available to Galactic Civilizations II players.  New features include the solar system destroying Terror Stars, unique technology trees per civilization, unique weapons per civilization, unique planetary improvements for different civilizations, a map editor with a 3D engine, a custom scenario editor that allows users to create extremely custom games that can be shared with each other, Metaverse tournaments, new graphics, special new ships with corresponding ship components and much more!

The expansion pack has a target release date of November 2007 and will list for $29.95.  Users can pre-order it directly from GalCiv2.com at a discounted price.  It requires Galactic Civilizations II: Gold Edition or Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar to be installed in order to use.

I really dont like the Solar System destroyers.

Not what I expected from Palpatine. Guess you never know some people. Was it all Vader's idea??

Now that you mention it.... Some galactic emperor you are....

We plan on updating the planetary invasion screen for Twilight.

Thank you Sir! Always good to hear straight from the top. Any details?

Oh man, I thought you were developing that MoM 2 type game and then I found out you're doing another GalCvi 2 expansion....Uuuuuuhh!

....Atleast this means you're finally done with the GalCiv serives for atleast 10 years.

How about telling us exactly why you dislike galciv2 instead of cutting it down for no reason? There are things I dislike about galciv 2 (the crappy planet invasion animation), but I at least list what I dislike. Oh well, gal civ 2 is not for everyone. As a case in point, I think World of Warcraft and the Sims are both really stupid. I will probably die now for saying that....

Why not just live your real life then wasting it playing a fake life like the sims?? I never got what the fascination is with finding a job and going to the bathroom before your "needing to piss or crap" gauge gets too full?? I mean I would hate having to find a job when I didn't have one, and I get plenty experience taking pisses and dumps when my "gauge" gets full in real life....

As for World of Warcraft, the South park episode "Make love not warcraft" says it all...

I'm glad to hear about the larger map size, but probably not for the reason most people think. My favorite maps are gigantic with uncommon or rare stars & planets; I like having lots of empty space between worlds. It makes viable worlds much more valuable (and worthy of taking by invasion or culture), and better simulates the vast distances between stars. The bigger and roomier, the better!

All the other features sound great too, especially the differing tech trees, units and buildings. It should make each race play very differently.

Is it a box or just a CD like the previous expansion? I don't want to buy just a CD without a box and manual.

Kryo,
Will you be able to design terror stars?

i think the most important thing is to thank Stardock for continuing to listen to the players and even taking the time to even do minor changes to the game. Yes, there are some things I don't like (planetary invasions, some micro-management issues, game performance issues) but those are all very insubstantial to my overall gaming experience which will be vastly increased by the map and campaign editors being released (of which the announcement of those were what made me the most excited)
In any case, I am so glad that one year ago when I was walking through the store I decided to pick up a copy of Gal Civ II; probably only beat by my love of SimCity 4 and Ocarina of Time. Keep it up and I'll keep buying.

I've done so before, perhaps even twice. Doing it again would feel as whining and sounding like a broken record. But sure:

There's no room for playerskill like in Heroes of Might & Magic and Age of Wonders. I like to micromanage stuff to make units be worth much money then I payed for them. Like in RTS games where if I harass with a unit I can perhaps kill some workerunits, slow his expansion and/or tech development and also divert his attention. That way, the harassing unit became worth like 30 times more then I payed for it if you can measure the harassing results in the game resources.

GalCiv 2 is simply too abstract for me to like it.

I come to this site partly because I got lots of free time on my hands (I need a job!) and also because I'm looking forward to their upcoming fantasy strategy game. And it bugs that GalCiv 2 (which I don't like) gets so much attention.

Best to contact [email protected] to find out for sure before ordering if you're wondering about the box/no box.

Good point and idea! I will surely try a map like this with that in mind.

I tend to agree with this. I was never too fond of terror stars. Now they destroy entire solar systems??? Naw.... I'm not too crazy about the Immense Galaxy setting, either. It just takes too much doggone time to play. My copy of Galciv2 is collecting dust now as it is, because I've got 2 new real-time-strategy games that are over in 30 minutes. I'll probably get the next expansion in the end (for all the other features), but I won't be itching to get it on release date like I was with DA.

What WOULD be cool, though, is if we have some good map designers out there who can put together some good maps/campaigns, and we have a good location to upload/download maps that have been reviewed & blessed. I'm getting tired of always playing sandbox. But really what I want most in an expansion are more bonus tiles & tile types. Give me some weird stuff--like build-a-starport-here-and-your-starships-get-a-30%-mass-driver-armor-bonus. Or build-a-factory-here-and-get-a-100%-asteroid-production-bonus.

Well technically it was the Geonosians and Darth Sidius who put the plan into reality. I wanted it for terror, not my fault it was actually used.

Its not the fact that I wouldnt like blowing up entire solar system, its the fact that this might make for a very unbalanced situation. The way I see it is that a person who has the resource to construct something like this would have the navy to protect it, so in the end youll have this jugernaught going around blowing up whatever it wants while being protected by a shell of fleets, the rest of the galaxy would pretty much be helpless(like they usually are) but this time with the added bonus of getting blown to pieces.

Hope solar system leave behind asteriod belts or something though... wouldnt want my murder of billions get in the way of my economy and industry.

Hopefully with terror stars there will also be a flip side: impossible-to-invade planets. Maybe some races will get some loony soldiering bonus, and terror stars are the much easier way to go.

But yeah, that would be AWESOME if they left behind big asteroid belts. Invade their population and take over their improvements? No...blow them up and mine their asteroids.

The new features in Twilight sound very nice. There's one general question I'm curious about though, that doesn't seem to be answered anywhere.

What's the status of custom races in Twilight? I love the sound of custom tech trees, weaponry, planetary improvements, and more for each race. But how will this affect customs? Will custom races be cut out to avoid unbalancing the game, will we be able to pick and choose tech trees/weapons/etc for customs, or will we be able to build our own unique techs from the ground up?

This expansion is news to me. I only checked my e-mail about an hour ago. Normally I would be providing a list of improvements this game needs for an expansion, but I've been too busy with the Sins beta to remember them all off-hand.

That said, I can remember these right now.

-Starbase fleets: Allow ships to join in fleet to protect starbases. I can't use fleets of ships to defend my starbases effectively without them waking up because a hostile ship passes by. I'm going to tell them to do the same thing that I ussually do: " *sigh*... hold your ground.".

-A fortify possition command: The guard and sentry commands are annoying because the units in question will wake up when ever a hostile unit passes by. Not having one assumes that there will never be a time where you would want a bunch of ships to fortify a place (such as an immobile object like a starbase) and never wake up "no matter what".

-Space Fortresses: If I was in charge of a galactic empire, I wouldn't be using fragile starbases to defend my valuable assests. Any place that was worth defending, I would make a space structure capable of surviving a major seige or two. Last time I checked, a huge hulled ship can be built to be superior to a starbase in every way (including mobility). It doesn't make much sense that you can't build a better space structure, that has more room for defensive parts since it doesn't have an engine, than a ship that has to move around. There is no reason why the space structure can't atleast be made equal to the ship, if not better.

________________

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I'm frustraded that I neither have a starbase strong enough to defend itself in the long run, nor do I have a fortify command that would make my fleets, that are strong enough to defend starbases, to act like one and keep quite...

I thought that the pop display meant all "able bodied, ready to be used" population. Not ACTUAL (civi) population. Think of it as people in military or civil service. They can be put to any use, and will be if the situation arises. I think the max pop is 100m. For reference, Earth has 6b, and growing. I'm not argueing that 100m is enough or too much, but that number, to me, clearly represents the military/civil/elite/trained population that can be used for government service at will.

That IS ACTUAL civil population. Because its not millions its billions. Look closely. And then think again about Earth 6b reference.

I belive planet takeover system in GalCiv is pretty much idiotic. And thats very strange, because rest of the game elements are awesome.
Because:
a) We can put billions of our taxable population (which includes everyone from artist to mall's clerk) to war. To one ship..

b) Planet that was attacked as well has billions of people who wants to die rather than pay taxes to other emperor.. neat. So all of them leave their cities and gather in one place so whole thing can be done quick. (one week war) Based of course not, of how you good at lasers or missiles + troops skill BUT on random numbers + troops skill.

Honestly, how many of you ppl, saved your game before planet invation in order to insantly try again if it fails. How many did the same for space fight ?

I think much less, because in space techlogy takes place instead of random numbers, and outcome won't differ much.

Now I wonder. What is the reason that ppl at stardock didnt make planet fight similar to space. Just create one more tech to study, lets say "Ground units hulls" and create tanks/etc to fight for planets using same three attack/defence techs ?

This is sounding really good. These two expansion packs followed by Gal Civ2 2.0 will make the game playable and fun for a loooooong time.

Who needs multiplayer??? I don't when the single player experience is so great!!!

I'll repeat my question in the "Win2K and Europe" thread here, not sure if the other thread is still getting attention:
I noticed that Windows 2000 isn't mentioned in the system requirements for the new expansion Twilight of the Arnor - which isn't much of a surprise given the problems above. One question though: Will Win2000 simply be not officially supported, or will the expansion not work at all because of a changed engine? Will DirectX 10 be necessary for TA?

Any takers?

Pleeeeeaaaaasssee listen to him! I too want a real starbase.

@Kyle:
Amen, you speak my mind. Please listen to him also.

An emphatic no to that (that would mean Vista only...).

I'm not currently aware of any reason why TA would be any less compatible with win2k than DA.
