Creating military starbase arrays

At first I thought this was an ingenious idea, but I tried it and it didn't work, at least not in DL 1.5. To test it I whacked the AI down to its last planet and moved around 100 constructors into an area along with 300 huge ships maxed out with weapons & defenses. I ended the game by taking their last planet and recorded the score. Then I reloaded, went 10 turns doing nothing, ended the game and recorded the score. Finally, I used the constructors to build 4 maxed out military starbases right in the middle of the 300 huge ships, boosting their stats, and THEN I went 10 turns and ended the game. Comparing the scores, there was virtually no difference, even a very slight drop in the starbase array scenario (probably due to using so many constructors). So I think this is a non-issue in terms of people using it to boost their scores. Maybe it worked in a previous version, I don't know, but it doesn't seem to work now. Just FYI.

final score is the average over the course of the whole game, so a last-turn array would indeed be virtually meaningless.

Thats where it went wrong, for that to work you need to use minimal armed ships aka one hit defence and/or one hit attack due to the way the scoring works. Using large armed / defence ships is virtually meaningless for that bit of cheese.

Its always obvious when it has been used by someone anyway, so its a bit pointless. Once you get hold of the technique its frankly a bit of "so what", its not exactly a challenge.

Military score is boosted by having military ships across the whole game, the earlier the better. So building military starbases early with a few ships parked under them, and continuing to upgrade the bases and add to the number of ships while upgrading older ones will make a difference in your score. Doing it all at the end and waiting 10 or even 20 turns wont help much, if at all.

I havent done any hard testing of this, but I have also noticed that the number of ships seems to matter more than the quality of the ship. Ive seen repeatedly that my military score will be higher on games which I relied on small or tiny hulled ships with less weapons, versus the games where I create a small fleet or 2 of top line large or massive hulled ships with excellent firepower. And that is without military starbases.

Well, not necessarily - there are several things you can do later in the game whereby you can watch your individual and overall scores go up in relatively short time frames. For example, I figured it was pointless to invest in technology after researching the entire tech tree and when I finished that game my tech score was pathetic. So next time around in year 3 of the game after completing the tech tree I did an experiment - I first went 10 turns at 0% research doing nothing, ended the game and recorded the score. Then I reloaded, changed only my investment in research to 80%, went 10 turns doing nothing and my final score went up by 1,250 points (technology score from 9,851 to 11,401). So if the military starbases mattered at all, I should have at least witnessed a slight increase. I wasn't expecting anything huge, but I was expecting something.

I haven't tried the low value ships like Zydor suggests. It seems like if it made no difference with the huge class ships, then I'm puzzled why it would be non-zero with a lesser armed ship. I'm willing to give it a whirl, though - what the heck.

You want a profound effect, you can't go for a quick fix four Sb array and some huge ships. 16-24 SBs and thousands of ships collecting there throughout the game does and will have the desired effect. I have done it(and in fact doing it currently) with 1.5. As your building it take a look at your military on the timeline screen and watch it soar. On larger games I at times try to get it up to 1m. I still don't get extremely large scores because I like to play sim-empire for a while and develop to slowly, but the first time I did it my score was almost double my previous best at that time.
