MV League Round 2

MV League Round 2

Game rules, settings and tweaks.

Hi all and welcome to round 2 of the Metaverse League. I think round 1 was a success and we can only do better from here. For those reading about the MV League for the first time, please see the threads at the bottom of this post for any information you need and please feel free to sign up and play, we would love to have you.

Our main goal with the league is to create a new way of playing the game and being competitive without the need to be able to get those super large scores. If we can get enough people playing we just might see the MVL get recognized as a viable method of playing and scoring which would lead us to another goal, that of having Kryo incorporate the MVL into the Altmeta. So anything we can do to promote the League and get more players interested will be greatly appreciated. I do believe that by ironing out a few kinks and showing the community that the League is, viable, here to stay and uniquely different that we might create a whole new way of playing GalCiv II.

A few tweaks to the rules and scoring.

No longer will "random anything" be in my selection process when it comes to planets, stars, etc...

I have tweaked the scoring a little based on a few suggestions. If we don't like it we can change back.

3,2,1 for fastest games, to be determined by submission time if there is a tie.
(get your games in quick guys)

-1 for the lowest scoring game

It is now 0 for a defeat, no penalty.

I can't think of anything i may have missed, i did troll the league threads looking for other suggestions. If i missed something we were going to implement please let me know.

Here is the teams just so everyone knows where everyone is,

The A-Team (A)

CornhuskerMac
Pndrev
Piznit
Dethadder
Xei Win Toh

Blade Runners (B)

neilo
TGE
Ghostwes
Marshall

Celestial Crusaders (C)

Darth
Playjeff
Mumble
Butterfly
TP Scott

Domination of Death (D)

Macmatt
Motti
Shadow
Elwood

Onto the round 2 setting's,

A military conquest on a small map with 7 opponent's.

Habitable planet's - common
Number of planet's - common
Number of Star's - abundant
Star density - tight
Anomalies - uncommon
Asteroids (DA) - rare
Tech rate - very slow

Disable tech trading
Disable Blind exploration
Enable Mega events (DA)
Disable Super Abilities (DA)

Of course all victory conditions must be enabled and all else is up to you.

Good luck all, this certainly looks like it will be an interesting challenge.

The Commish.

Hey, I just had a great Idea! (maybe)

Since the league is supposed to give a way of scoring that gives new players a chance to compete with big time scoremongerers!

Here's how it goes...

1)you find the average points scored altogether.

2)you take the average and compare it with the scores of each team. Teams who scored higher will get a penalty next round. For instance, if the average for a round was 5 and Team C scored 8, they should get a 2 point penalty next round.

so, penalties would be p= -2/3d while d= t-a... p= -2/3(t-a)
a)average
t)team score
d)difference
p)penalty/bonus

If team b scored 2 points in that round... they would get a 2 point bonus.

3) make sure to round in steps one and two!

Now that I'm done explaining... I think this would make things more fair, for the worse player that is....... anyway........ I hope everyone knows how to do math, or you won't understand any of that!

Thoughts???

I think that's the blueprints to build a doomsday device is it not?

The idea is interesting, i don't have a clue what all that means though.

ShadowWorrior's point is that some kind of handicap system could possibly be useful. I do agree to some extent but point to Neilo's response as the reason not to do it. Regardless of the simplicity of the system I fear it would quickly become unweildly and a major pain for our commissioners to have to implement and continually update. I think it both better and easier to change up teams a bit if any one team gets too far ahead or behind.

Someone suggested a three month starting and trial phase for this league - so I suggest we keep the teams for one more month - it makes the new arrangements easier - should they be necessary.
I also think that how a good score mainly depends on the game settings. My first game was rather weak - because as a typical civilian player I didn't see the need to build much of a military or go around and conquer too many planets - so my score was low.
This game, I had to completely reinvent a stratgy that works for me because the setting were so interesting/odd/unusual -->and I did far better on unfamiliar terrain.

So some of the scoring depends on the settings and the situation (random events...).

On the other hand, we've got green medal players among us...

Whew! My second attempt. (I got thorougly stomped on my first one.) Getting ahead sure went slow without tech trading. Still, once the wars started, it was smooth sailing.

Alright, Motti you're now counted in my list. Unbelieveable game btw.

Ditto. Although tech trading disabled hurts the AI alot more then it hurts the player.
In my game, I dominate the galaxy but it'll take time to mop up. Although moving up a level is much more fun. Not a second spent in boredom.

Motti - bad for us you're so good. Very Evil of you!

I don't know as if I buy that premise. I think difficulty level comes into play very strongly. If playing at a level where the AI gets little or no bonus I would tend to agree, but at suicidal this is absolutely false. What people forget is that the bonuses are applied to every ability, so the AI gets an "extra" 100% bonus to income, social production, military production, research, influence, ... *every* single ability is doubled. So besides having twice the income and twice the social production with which to build at least twice the research capability the suicidal AI gets twice the effect from each unit of research. The net effect is the suicidal AI has probably far closer to 4 times more research capability than the human.

Yes. Very nice game. I think it's top score (so far) and at 4 years just missed out on a game speed bonus by submission date. Well done.

Haven't seen much activity here for a bit. I hope that means everyone is hard at work getting their best effort to submit.

I've actually taken the time to start another gigantic abundant all type game that usually takes me two months to play. I'm about two weeks into it at the moment but I don't want to forget about the MV League. I think we have another week exactly. It end's the 13th right (Neilo, Scot)?

Also, I still have heard nothing from the PM's I sent Darth Silhouette either here or at the Core. He was last seen at the Core on August 4th which is the same date that his profile says he last visited here.

In any case if he doesn't return I assume that Team C will not be penalized, but if he does return I assume he will be welcomed back into the league if he still wants to play.
I would say no penalty, especially since he hasnt been around since before this round even began

The 13th???

Isn't that an unlucky day???

no wonder I'm getting bad scores!!!

It sounds like you need to align with an evil empire to make that 13 a lucky number. There's a tyrannical one around here somewhere. I understand that there's a special for members with "blaster" or "oshiro Mifune" in their names.

Special?? I think maybe even bribes!!!!

Yes Mumble, the 13th is the last days play. I have 1 game ready to go but might throw another up if i get the chance, i too have a gig abundant all taking all my attention.

And certainly no penalty will be given to Team C. Darth is of course most welcome to return at a later date if he chooses.

I'm working on my GCII game right now(with my new graphics card which is soooo awesome btw) but the game bundle which came with the graphics card and 1 game that I bought but could never run before cause of my low-end system has got me addicted. Which is why I'm almost never at the core or here.

Anyway, I'll procrastinate for now. Anyway, back to my Geforce powered FIESTA!

I'll procrastinate for now

Why procrastinate now when you can always do it later?

I'm looking forward to the start of the next round. Is there a comprehensive revised list of bonus/penalty points somewhere that I have missed?

Actually there's a thread where some of the proposed changes have been discussed but I don't think much of a concensus has been reached let alone any actual decision as to what changes (if any) to make.

Here's the link. We should probably get on with the discussion so we're prepared for the next round without too much delay. Also we could move the start/end date of our month to the 15th which makes a little more sense.

So like.. I went ahead and tried on a game on the settings described. Not a very noticeable score, but still learning the game and had to blast through it quick (not a lot of free time this weekend).

2 Questions:

Am I allowed to post it to help out team B (that I just joined?)? I saw people joining and posting in the past, but not this close to the end of the round I think.

Should I actually post a low scoring (5400ish) game? It looks like there was a penalty for lowest score at one point, not sure if that is still in effect. Also not sure how the whole 5th member thing would work, seems like if the other 4 post mine should get thrown out anyways.

Thanks!

No.1) Of course you should post it but if you think you can manage a better score then why not try. If you don't think you'll be able to make it then just post it at the last date.

No.2) Well, we cant change the rules in the middle of a round because that would be unfair. The 5th member thing works like this: the player with the lowest score would have his score dropped.
Dont give up, if you think your current score is too low, try another game. But anyways, it never hurts to try.

I'm a relatively unexperianced player because I haven't played GCII in a while(a long. As soon as I get this meta game finished I'm going to try out my new graphics card and play a larger galaxy for the first time ever. (I've never played larger then medium)
