The Krynn--Brad's gift to maso + players?

Okay, I can only beat painful so far... A bunch of strong players have called them the 'best' race. Is it just because of the off-type denfese bug working with the tie rule or something silly like that? They are not powerful when I play them. I have two questions.

1. What makes them the 'best' race and how do you make this count?
2. Do you think Brad made them for the high-end players? I have not seen a single non-high level player call them good...

There was an unofficial tourney where people submitted scores and the Krynn finished #1.

They allow you to get the highest morale bonus possible meaning higher taxes, more money.

Neutrality rocks.

Thats the 3 reasons I can think of off the top of my head, but I wouldnt call any race "the best". I beat up the Krynn all the time!

Well, no race is the 'best' (unless Brad really messed up) because they get stronger and weaker against who your playing against and different map sizes/settings. And there is no objective way to measure what settings to play on ('cause playing on all random is silly.) But I can ask what makes the Krynn good. I also like to thank the galciv2 makers that made the Krynn decent. It's a bad hackeyed to make the umm "fundies" in sci-fi games obligatory insane rushers.

Super Spy ability of the Krynn is definitely not the best ability to me, but it is pretty sweet. Counter espionage centers add morale boost as well, but are fairly expensive, and starting with one spy, while not a lot, can gather intel fairly quick when you drop it on the first civ you encounter, especially if they dont research and nullify it.

the Krynn seem to have very strong AI, at least on the typical settings i play with. i believe it's their AI programming because when I want the Arceans or Korx to be more of a threat, I change their personality type to Krynn and it seems to work very well.

I don't think so. The game I'm playing currently the kryn can't seem to redesign thier ships. Me and the the other 3 Ais have pretty much topped out our weapons, and here the Kryn are still using basic lasers.

Worse, they did the best on the colony rush, and had a good lead on tech. They're currently sending hordes of crappy fleets my way, which go up like kindling.

Meanwhile the Korath are actually pretty annoying. For the 1st time in a long time I haven't been able to dominate, mostly because my lack of military resources. They've actually taken some planets with spore ships...

To me, the Korath seem to be the strongest... (been playing crippling lately)

hmm that's odd... did you randomize the intelligence or anything that'd account for it?

i agree that the korath seem to be the best. but i've played more than one game where the krynn were very close. however i don't like their logo or appearance so i haven't played with them in a while.

The Krynn and Korath share one thing at least. There are inflexable. That's intersting I thought flexablity was important.

Nope.

It is. It is part of their racial descriptions / characteristics that these 2 races are powerful but inflexible. Also, at high difficulty levels, the flexibility of the real human player is one of your few constant advantages.

I've always been able to get a jump on the AI easier with the Krynn, it seems.

The Krynn simply have a massive list of racial bonuses that cumulatively make them very strong. No one has mentioned the +25 diplomacy or +10 economy so far, but combine that with +50 to morale and defense and you've got a race than can play any style - diplomat, war monger, economic powerhouse, all of the above - efficiently. They really have no weak point.

i dunno their super ability is pretty gimpy if you ask me.

Yeah, the Super Spy ability is kind of lousy, and for some reason, to me, religious-fanatic fish-headed aliens wouldn't really make good spies(Now wouldn't a fish-head really stick out in a crowd of Altarians?). Super Dominator also becomes worse and worse as the game wears on.

As for the true best race, it's us - the human players. Adaptable to everything and able to win any kind of victory against any AI.

The Krynn are inflexible because their science reasearching is weak. They econ is strong but not enough to keep up in tech for long. Therefore they must attack early in the game. They military is not the strong too... They econ bonuses are supposed to support this large early game empire and diplomacy is to stop people dog-pilling on them and their super spy is supposed to weaken the first target. They also cannot switch ship weapons/defenses easily.

At least that was the supposed to work. A good play can keep up in tech anyway. With that weakness gone they don't have to attack early with a weak military. Also all you really need for military (save for the late game) are two good weapons with zero armor. That's why the Krynn are good.

miw72, but...playing as the Krynn is a lil different; yeah, their science resrch is weak but, take some econ bonuses and morale boosts, and raise those taxes, and just buy yer way into history. i always play wiht the tech victory off but obv i wanna be at least in the Top 2-3 on research and the high taxes i can get from the Krynn allow to build and/or buy many things that just aren't as easily attainable with other races with different focuses. Sure, i could take the Altarians and max out research, but if i cant pay for it, i sure as heck aint gonna learn nothing new (obv, as my grammar dictates lol)
