Out of Memory

Out of Memory

Hello,

I used to be able to play just fine. I have recently downloaded 1.61 (Stardock says I am up-to-date!)

I can play for about 15 minutes before I get an "out of memory" error. I can restart, load just fine, and then about 15 minutes later it crashes again with "out of memory".

I am using Windows Vista 32-bit home version.
I have the most recent Nvidia drivers for my 8800 GTS (Feb 2007, I believe).

Yesterday, I downloaded the new Forceware drivers from Nvidia...it was signed July 26th, 2007...no change - same memory errors. Other games like Oblivion and Total War II seem to work just fine.

I expanded my virtual memory and page file sizes but to no avail, they are now:

Total Physical Memory 2,045.94 MB
Available Physical Memory 1.50 GB
Total Virtual Memory 5.83 GB
Available Virtual Memory 5.05 GB
Page File Space 3.91 GB

I have an Intel Dual Core processor at 2.5G speed and 2G of RAM.

I dont remember having this problem before downloading 1.61...but then I had not played in a few months - I just came back to relive my old experiences, ah youth!

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

PS I would show my debug.err files but I have no clue where to find them!

This was after apparently having at last gotten an adequate Nvidia driver installed (fingers crossed) on my new Vista 32-bit machine.

Vista is known to have problems with resuming from sleep in general, FYI.

Vista is known to have problems

Didn't I mention I've moved to ribber-front property, along Denial...

The Vista box in my life is not my choice. More passionately than ever, I'm preaching the gospel of Not Before SP1!

The reason I asked if you had tried in windowed mode is because we're wondering if there's something buggy with the texture memory managment that wouldn't happen in windowed mode because the device handles things a bit differently.

Our software that tracks down memory leaks is currently not working, so I'm working with tech support for that company to try and get it working.  In the meantime, I'm trying to reduce the memory footprint of GalCiv2 and checking various areas of the code to see if I can discover what is hanging around in memory that doesn't get loaded back in when a save game is loaded.

Ok People... M$ has released a Hotfix to Fix the Memory allocation problem with Vista

This should help people like my self with Windows Vista and a 8800 GTX....

However this just helps... if your game has a memory leak its still going to overflow at some point... however this should add another gig or so to the Application layer while not eating into the kernel space.

From what iv read... don't bother if you have a high end ATI card...

If you really want to understand why this happends read about it on anandtech.com they have 3 articals back to back about it...

My new superstition, which seems to work well, is to never use auto pilot to allow transports to attack planets at the end of the turn.

That may sound crazy, but that's my experience. Most of my out of memory errors would come after an invasion on the end of a turn, the graphics would flake out, and the next turn I'd get the out of memory.

Anyway if anyone else is regularly seeing this, I'd suggest giving this a try...

I can get it by just hitting the End Turn button twelve times, and never doing anything at all.   That's running the Hi-Res Mods and several other mods that add new ships, planets, etc. But the invasions/ship battles do have a horrible effect on the regular game as well, in my experiences.

I get it when I try to save with gigantic abundent.
Prior to that, the ship movement is slow and intermittant.

Gigantic common is okay.
