Question about starbases

I've been reading a bunch on starbases but nothing seems to tell me what Im wanting to know. I know all about econ and mining bases, the military ones i got down too. It is just the influential ones that I don't entirely get. I cannot tell if, when you put an influential module on your base, the base produces its own influence or if the percent will only affect planets. I got a bunch of IFBases around my borders, but I don't see them expanding or doing much and Im thinking they only help planets not produce their own influence, and if they do its puny <_<... Anyone here know more about this? I want to know if I should burn down my influencial bases and build military.

Not really sure exactly how starbases deal with influence but when I built an influence starbase in a solarsystem with 2 friendly planets and surrounded on 3 sides by enemy solar systems it seemed to increase my boarder after a while. This was played on normal difficulty and I put a few additional influence boosting pieces on the starbase. Not very effective in the end though.

So their not very effective in solar systems eh? Do they do anything when not around a planet or solar system?

Influence starbases have a MAJOR effect. If you put one up in open space, that area is under your influence immediatly with expanded borders. If you put one up next to an opponents border, it will "push against it" depending on how strong your overall influence is. Influence starbases will not have an effect on neighboring solar systems unless they are within the bases' range of effect. However if both you and another race have a planet in a system, the planets' influence fight aginst each other. Add an Influence starbase in that system and watch your influence against your opponent's planet increase dramatically. Pay attention to the numbers in parentheses, if it goes up high enough, you opponent's planet will revolt and join your side!

Oh, 2 more things. 1st: any starbase will increase the exploration range of ships in the area. If your exploration ship gets a messege that it can't go further, get a constuctor there, build a base, and you will be able to travel futher from "home".
2nd: if you build an influence base next to an opponents planet, you had better build a couple of defense and weapons modules (or at least have a warship guard it) or your opponent is likely to send ships to destroy the pesky base.
