Is it possible to play in 16-bit color depth?

Just curious because I am playing this game on a crappy integrated intel card. I get a significant performance boost when using 16-bit color instead of 32-bit for most games. NO, i cannot upgrade this card, i am on a laptop.

GalCiv2 requires 32-bit, sorry.

How come I can edit the prefs.ini in "My Documents\My Games\GC2DarkAvatar" to:

[Video]
DisplayWidth=1024
DisplayHeight=768
ColorDepth=16
Fullscreen=1

After starting a game and exiting Dark Avatar, it remains unchanged and still says 16 -bit color depth. Am I being deceived?

I tried changing the resolution to 800x600 as well, which did have some effect but was unplayable due to improper scaling of some of the menus.

Well, modifying a config file doesn't means that the game is designed to worked with that data. The minimum resolution is 1024x768 and the video and graphics require the color depth to be 32 bits.

Yea, i was just curious because when I set the resolution to 800x600 that DID have some effect. I thought perhaps the 16-bit color depth setting might do something as well.

GalCiv2 isn't set up to start in 16 bit from the settings anymore, but it will attempt to start in 16 bit color if everything else it tries fails.  However, at the very least it wouldn't look right because all of the textures are 32 bit.
