My feelings on the Shipyard

I discovered GalCiv2 only recently (less than a week!) but I already love it. I expecially love the shipyard, spending more time building good looking ships than actually playing the game!

However, I think some things could use some tweaking, as it make the creation of a good ship quite harder than it could be. I will list the things that I thought could use some improvement, hoping a developper see that and can tell wich is doable and wich is day-dreaming

- No function to copy/paste an object.

- Objects can be moved only individually. We cannot move a whole group by moving a parent component. This can be annoying when you build a good chunk, and then realize the whole chunk should be a little lower, or something. You are then forced to remove ALL the components one by one, move the first component, and rebuild on it one by one.

- Since there is no copy/paste, to copy an object I click on it to have its size/orientation values, then I put another one of the same. Work well, BUT the new object is actually a little tiny bit smaller than the original. A little bug in the value, I guess, wich force me to resize a little each new component.

- About resizing, we could use a +/- button for fine tuning. And a numeric value would be great!!!

- New objects are attached with one anchor point. Always the same, and that's a shame! Would be great to have the possibility to switch by wich of his own anchor point we attach an item. For example, I want to make a stack of cylindric containers. Right now, I can only attach them end to end, and not side to side.

- Rotations could use a fine tuning option, allowing less than 45° rotations. I know this will probably not be possible, but I would love to have an option like that.

- When scrolling trough the list of placed components at top of the screen, there is a bug when you come at the last components and back by one page: you come back two pages instead. To have the correct page of components, you need to back two times, and forward once.

- This list of components could use some tweaking, its kinda hard to find what you look for when you have a hundred components, and simply getting to the end of the list start to be annoying.

- The list of available components could also use some tweaking. For example, I would love to have the options to put components in a "favorites" list. There is already three categories, it would simply be a fourth category, and for each component we click on, we could have the option to add/remove it to/from the favs.

That's all I'm thinking off right now. If I remember anything else, I'll add it here.
Anyway, the game is still awesome, and the shipyard even more! I think I didnt had so much fun building something since my childhood when I was playing Lego! Great job!!

PS: excuse any english mistake I could make, its not my native language, thx (but dont hesitate to correct me anyway, learning blablabla)

Move by parent: Yes, that would indeed be a very good addition.

Rotations can be tweaked in the game options menu. I have mine set to 15°, you can go as low as 5° AFAIK.

and then realize the whole chunk should be a little lower, or something.

I use 'stick-like' long components (there are several) often as a base for attaching larger chunks. I've noticed that as a side effect if I increase/decrease the size of the 'stick' the whole chunk lowers or lifts or increases or decreases it's distance to the hull etc.

For example, I want to make a stack of cylindric containers. Right now, I can only attach them end to end, and not side to side.

Using these sticks, you can also create stacks of cylindric containers. So instead of connecting them directly you put them on a beam. By playing with the size of the beam and the containers, I'm sure you can make a stack of containers.

About resizing, we could use a +/- button for fine tuning. And a numeric value would be great!!!

Yes! I want this too!

You can take a look in the library at ship designs others have created for inspiration and uploading your own ship designs.

Good luck with your ship building!

I use the sticks too. With them, I've been able to build my stack of containers, but its kinda a pain to do it, and it multiply the number of components used by two or three! So connecting components by another anchor point than their default one would still be very very usefull.

However, I dont put sticks everywhere. When I work on a design, I follow the flow and I dont know when its going to be a big stack or not.

In addition to that maybe you could have a favorote group of pieces saved in the list. Like if you want all of you ships to have a certain combination of pieces, you can click on them and then save the chunk as a piece in itself.

As already stated this can be set on the game options menu. Another option on this menu that affects ship building is the flag indicating whether or not to strip functional components while upgrading a design. Both options should be moved to the ship building UI.

Some other improvements I would to see:

(1) When I'm designing a ship I'm forced to use the current miniaturation even if I don't need all that space. It would be nice to save the ship design using the minimum miniaturation necessary to fit all the components so that the design is available in future games with the minimum tech. Also, a loss of the Hyperian Shrinker could invalidate all your ship designs, even those with lots of empty space.

(2) It would be nice to be able to sort the ship components based on cost, size, and/or value (e.g., attack/defense value of a weapon/defense).

(3) It would be nice to have the option to see all ship designs not just the ones available for building. Ship designs that you don't yet have the tech for building would be grayed out.

I feel fluent with the shipyard, but a copy and paste function, a mirror function, and the ability to move an object along with those attached to it would be fantastic.

I think these are all great suggestions. I have a sugestion or two but am not sure if it is possible to implement them or not.

1: I would like to see a hide selected extra button. Sometimes when building I spend 5 minutes or more just trying to find the right hard point (Red Arrowish thingies) to place the extra because there are so many other hard points in the same area. I have tried zooming in and rotating as well as a few other tricks that don't always work. By clicking on extras and then hiding them I could see where I need to place my current extra. Then I could hit the restore all button and have everything back to normal.

2: Like custom ships I would like to build custom extras and save them to allow me to use them as an extra. Let me explain. Lets say I want to build a turret for my battleship. I could use current extras to build my turret and then save it as a user extra. Then I could place as many of these turrets (user extras) as I want to in any size I want to just like a normal extra except that this one would be mine and I would not have to do so much repetative work.

3: Someone else has said this once before but I would like to see a scale bar to let you know what size ship you are building. I have inadvertantly made ships the size of battleship on a corvette's frame. I know I got carried away but it was too big when I was done. And maybe this scale bar could be used like the extras/weapons/etc. where you could adjust the final design to fit your current frame.

I hope these makes sense. I love this game and I love making ships when I get the chance to play. I think that this would help ease some minor frustrations that I have had and may help others as well.

I see I'm not the only one who could make good use of some Shipyard tweaks
Let's just hope a dev come and see this

One of the options screens already allows you to change this value. I've generally got it set 10 degrees. But would be better if it was actually in the ship yard next to the rotation dials.
