just go into options and turn off the lose functional parts button

you will have to mainually remove weapons engines and other parts but your design will be safe. and us a different name for each upgrade so that you designs don't end up needing to be totally teched out before you can build the design.

Only if you're updating from 1.0 or 1.1. The initial release used a different format for the ship design files from what is now used.

The only way to 'convert' them is to build them, save, update, and hope the save game loads under the newer game version. If it does, then just upgrade and resave those designs to get them to the new format.
