ship size.....

(ok im running v1.5 (dark avatar) so i guess some of this may have been fixed in 1.6v? =/)
ok when i have a "huge" size ship and i have a "small" size ship in a fleet and i go into a fleet battle, the "small" ship is visualy almost as big as the "huge" ship ...............that kinda takes away from the........."experience", a lil doesnt it?

Yeah, I noticed the same thing in my games. Strangly, the earlier version didn't do this to the ships, the large ships were large, and the tiny ships were... tiny.

Yes, it does take away from the experience, it wipes out my entire gameplaying mojo when I see my huge ship turned into a "mini-me".

yeah i think they should even be mostly stationary in fleet battles, kinda like the opening scene in starwars 3 =/, (i like that scene =D lol), it makes the ship seem more powerful, (even if it isnt much lol)

Huh? I have v1.5, and it shows up as DL, not DA.

Or are there two different 1.5's a DA and a DL, or am I missing something?

Also, yes, stationary battles might actually turn out looking better than the current ones where the ships ram each other and form this blob.... which is just..... uncool.=/

It would work like this, the ship move toward each other, the ships that are a medium class or above find a spot and shoot from there, the small ships, move moderatly fast and shoot stuff and the tiny fighters do really cool manuevers, and shoot stuff.

Now that........ would be cooooooooool.

ooooooooooooh this would be cool........
if u have a huge ship................and there was a module for a hangar =D..............where u could store your tiny ships! =D.............and when ur in a fleet battle............THEY FLY OUT!!!!=D!!!!

"Anikin! We have to fly into that hanger!"

So what earlier version didn't do this? Regular 1.0?

I like that idea of staionary battles, as well as smaller ship hangers ect. Seeing large and small ships dance around equally and more like a dance routine is annoying. the invasion battles are stationary... Why not space?

The invasion battles aren't stationary, the troops just ram and pass right through each other.

Tiny ships flying out of the larger ships would be cool too. especially if there were a intro scene to every battle that shows them flying out! The only problem is that there aren't that many people who will go around using tiny sized ships when a medium or large, even small, would be more advantagious. I rarely use tiny fighters. I think the logistics system should be messed with a little, and balanced out so that there are more stratagies to making a fleet than, get the biggest most heavily armed ships I have in there, i.e. the large and huge hulls. Like the tiny fighters should be EVEN cheaper, have more space, or use less logistics. This way tiny fighters can have advantages.

If I could mod my GCtypes.xml file without the game crashing (kryo, help?), I would change the logistics system myself.

Oh well, I still think stationary battles would be cooler than the blob battles we have now.

just my 2 cents. (and five $)

I really wish the fleet battles would have looked like some of the battles in the game Homeworld 2.The proportions of the ships seemed more realistic and the way the ships were animated during combat was more exciting. Now I just disable the combat viewer for the most part.

ships sizes and movement have been adjusted a few times IIRC, though i can't remember in what ways for what versions (you could review the extensive dev logs if you have a burning curiosity).

my guess is they recycled some old code and didn't notice this particular behavior - i haven't, but by the time i'm using large ships i've generally stopped using small and tiny (in games where i actually get there).

Yeah, I do not like the individual ship proportions at all. I've had instances of battleships being smaller than enemy frigates, which really takes the fun out of crushing their fleets with my bigger ships.

The idea of having the larger ships move slower is a good one. Even if they ultimately move at a comparable pace to the smaller ships, they need to have more inertia to feel big.

I also don't like how they wobble, it looks really stupid. The bigger ships I mean. Its really visible with some of the Large sized Terran hulls, the really long ones that are like the 'Horizon' from the movie Horizon.

If a modded xml is making the game crash, then you probably just have a typo in it somewhere.

probably, but I checked it alot and even re-wrote some of it but it still crashed the moment I started a game.

Some people have advised looking at it in Internet Explorer too. It'll just stop when it runs into an error in the file, so that should make it much easier to track down.

Thanx. never tried that...

Anyway, I just re-did my logistics system, I'm going to test it soon and fix stuff, expect a logistics mod in the library soon.

Back to the original post.

I'm running 1.61 (well, 1.70a[b] now).

Since I often use tiny constructors all over the place, and often use an upgrading succession of small system defense craft, I often see tiny and small craft on the same screen as large and huge.

I don't recall any time recently that anything as seemed out of scale.

So the ship scaling during battles was fixed in v1.6 and above?
Not to my knowledge. Large ships barely look bigger than medium hulls. Medium hulls barely beat small hulls for size, etc.

You could add enough jewelry to your ships to make them much larger in size. That is waht I generally do. I agree that the difference is still lacking the epic feel it needs though.

I'd love it if it were as simple as changing an XML file... alas.
