Brad's ongoing GalCiv update thread

Hi gang. I won't be around today, I'm at home -- my wife and I are moving to a new home. Even as I type this in the basement, there are boxes all around me and my wireless laptop is connected to my cellphone so I'll make this brief.

We'll hvae updates via SDCentral next week to GalCiv but those who want to try early patches here they are:

1) Some people have reported that the game crashes when they submit their score.

Try this new DLL (replace the one in your GalCiv directory):
http://www.stardock.com/temp/sdnetlib.dll

Here is an update that adds a few nice little tweaks. Just unzip with the directory structure intact into your GalCiv directory.
http://www.stardock.com/temp/gc101a.zip

Let us know how these work for you.

Well your not the only one, Cymsdale. I have done everything you have tried and a bit more. :notsure: Hopefully, someone figures out where something is going wrong here. Oh well, still enjoy the game. :)

Well, be happy that you have the game already. I'm stuck waiting untill my retailer gets it or I get a credit card (still in college, so not gonna happen) (:(

Yea, after installing the new dll, then re-registering my player with metaverse, I posted my scores successfully!

I wish I knew what I did to fix it. Everything I did just prior to the problem being fixed I had tried a few times before. The only thing I did differently when my games actually posted was I WAS NOT running Stardock Central in the background when I posted. I had been running it previously. That is probably just a coincidence though, as I can't see why that would make a difference. It just magically started to upload correctly. I can't explain it. :notsure:

Tried the new executable but I can't run it, it crashes to the desktop immediately.

I'm not even getting the option to send my games to the Metaverse. In other threads people told me that after you hit the Done button you're supposed to be prompted to send your score in but my game always goes back to the main menu. I've downloaded all the patches but nothing works. Can you only send in scores from specific levels of difficulty? I also have a dialup connection. Is it not prompting me because I'm not connected?

cpbeller: the multimedia downloads are just the in-game cutscenes and whatnot. If you have the retail version, you already have all of it. It's posted on SDCentral separately so that those of us that bought the game online can download the core game and start playing w/o having to wait for the huge movie files to complete.

Harry Seldon: I think the lack of a connection is probably your problem, although I have no way to be sure of that. I can tell you that difficulty level has nothing to do with it -- I've submitted a Cakewalk game, and it doesn't get easier than that. Try Alt-tabbing out of the game just before you win, connect to the 'net, then go back to the game and see if you can submit your score.

I cant successfully submit games either. I get the submit screen and after submission, it takes me to the main menu, and thats it. Checking the Metaverse, there are no entries for 'Olaf', the name I registered my SN to on the Metaverse.

Great game so far though, I like it a lot.

One thing I'd like to see in a patch though, a 'scout' setting for ships. One where they methodically uncover the black 'fog of war' that initially covers the map. I know about Sector Sweep, but that just works on one sector, and sometimes it stops working when the autopilot course it plots would take it over an anomoly or a resource.

Also, is there a way to get resources to permanently show up in the mini map in the top right once they have been discovered? They seem to disappear from there when I move out of sensor range of them.

olaf,

IIRC resources only disappear from the minimap when another civ starts mining them. it's a good way to check if you should send a constructor.

harry:

i have the same problem with the metaverse. i'm gonna try disabling my pop-up blocker before submitting next time. maybe that'll help.

cheers

resources disapear when the aliens "cover" them with a space station. I think it would be bether they would keep the x, but then when you see them again and find the spacestation it would change to that races color maybe even to the + sign, and keep that way until you uncover it again, seeing that another race has captured the resource, or just destroied the starbase etc.

That I cant register in metaverse is the most hated bug for me, definitely!

THANKS FOR THE TIPS! I re-registered my metaverse alias and serial number, and swapped in the new beta dll. When I won my second game and submitted that to Metaverse, both games went through! Hurray! Thanks!

Fantastic support! Fantastic game! Thanks tons!

It is also working for me now...but I don't have a clue why. I basically gave up on it but just did a game tonight (tried going for a tech victory but the drengin decided they wanted a wee bit of war going on, finally wiped me out when I wouldn't give them 2930 credits. :( Honestly, I am not sure what is happening here but I am glad it is working.

Reregistering at the metaverse section has helped alot of people so anyone that is having a problem should probably give that a go. Have fun and good luck!

I too am unable to submit. I've registered with Metaverse, am using the new .dll, and nothing. I'll just keep trying.

I was in the same boat as you are, and magically it started working. I can't say exactly why. I had registered with Metaverse at least 8 times, and double checked my info on the submission screen prior. The exact steps I took when it finally worked were:

Tried to register on Metaverse by taking the dashes out of the serial number (didn't recognize my serial)
Tried to use "l" instead of "i" in the serial number (didn't recognize it either)
Tried it with the correct serial number with the dashes (it accepted it)
Shut down Stardock Central
Loaded GC
Loaded save game
Finished and submitted

This time it showed up on the Metaverse board, but I can't explain why. Before this my scores were not even being uploaded to the system, as this was verified by Stardock. It's worked since, but I can't say exactly why. Good luck, and I hope you get it working!

It is also worth rebooting you machine after you've updated the .dll and re-registered with the Metaverse.

I'm having trouble submitting scores to the metaverse as well. I updated to 1.01a and installed the new DLL. I registered on the metaverse page, rebooted, and then tried to submit a score from galciv. No luck. I also tried disabling the firewall, but that didn't help either. I'm running Windows 2000.

Games aren't taking again. :( I really can't explain it, I haven't changed anything at all since the last game I submitted, I haven't even installed the new update that was released tonight. *scratches head*

ban25 and SgtLoric,

If you are familar with the Registry, can you export your HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Stardock registry key and send it to me at [email protected] I think the problem you are running into may have something to do with your registry keys.

Ok, we have isolated a problem in the GalCiv code where it sends some invalid data which is causing your scores to not show up. I should be able to touch up the database to fix the invalid data which will make your scores show up. And the next build of GalCiv will have the the fix for future submissions.

I don't know when the next build will be but I suspect it will be very soon.

Solops, it does. When GalCiv manages to finally get in to metaverse, it will dump them all. I don't know if there is a total limit to what it will shoot up.
That is good to hear, but your comment is the only mention of it that I have seen anywhere.

The metaverse still keeps track of scores that are sent, even if it can't identify who sent them at the time. That may be what he's referring to.

It's been suggested that GalCiv should track scores that couldn't be sent in for one reason or another, but I don't know if that actually happens or not.
