Do you destroy conquered enemy planets?

I usually play on a huge galaxy with a couple of AI opponents.

Usually the planets conquered end up with some of infrastructure destroyed
and the economy is a drain. Also of course the planet could be retaken.

So I usually nerf it. Cruel, but necessary.

I suppose in a really long game, you might want to resurrect the planets.

I'd like to hear opposing views!

I don't wreck the infrastructure, the planet is usually fully developed and running at a profit immediately after I invade, not to mention providing conveniently located forward basing/shipbuilding facilities.

I usually rebuild all conquered planets to my econ template, with just the occasional standout made into a production world.

To keep the infrastructure, you have to be careful how you invade.

I would rather take out the planet quickly in a military game.

And sometimes I find the infrastructure is wacky. No factories.
Mainly tanning salons and tatoo parlors;)

Well, Destroying a planet is a short term plan- you can quickly take out planets, but the tradeoff is you don't gain anything significant. Whereas conquering it traditionally is more long term- its harder to invade, but you get some value out of the planet. But you already knew that.

I usually play gigantic maps, which are very long, so I go with the long term plan, good old fashioned combat.

Unless you are trying to minimize micromanagement, why destroy any newly taken planet? With a bit of effort, you can easily make it profitable and/or useful to your empire. More population = more research, income, production, ships, or whatever you build it to do. I never eradicate any planet.

If you keep the planet and the enemy AI has any power and the planet is in enemey territory, the enemy may take it back. Then you have to hit it again. I find that most, if not all, the planets take too long to give you any real production.

I do keep some planets. It depends on their value. Near the end of the game, I nerf them.

I play gigantic maps too, although never with "abundant everything," and I have a tendency to role-play much more than think about my score.

The only time I ever went on a scorched-earth binge was when I had been managing an already painfully large empire and one of the AIs (the Torians, IIRC) pulled a couple of grievously annoying moves that caused me to decide they and everything they'd ever built needed destroying.

I would rather take out the planet quickly in a military game.

I'm also into diplo wins at the moment, and this point makes me wonder how (if?) the AIs think of the player destrying freshly conquered colonies. I haven't noticed an AI scorching earth, and it seems like the behavior should make your diplo ratings "not so much fly as plummet."

Sorry if this is a beginner question but how do you destroy a planet?

Just hit the destroy colony button in the planet interface. You can even do this to your homeworld.
