What game or genre would you like to be reborn?

For me I loved the old style space dogfighting games like wing commander. I wish they could have a revival. I also liked elite 2 that was awesome. I heard a rumour that elite 4 is in secret development and is due for release in 2013. Im on the edge of my seat for that one, although I will be 30 then but my kids will be 8 and 7, so I can introduce them to the genre woo. Bet they'll be thrilled.

I also like fantasy RPG like diablo (is diablo 3 ever gonna come out or is that dead?). Anyone rememeber Golden Axe for the Amiga? That was cool, that could be reborn as long as they keep the sound effects!

What old game or genre would you like to see make an updated 21st century appearance?

Is Thief that Splinter Cell-esque game where you steal stuff (thief...stealing...or did I miss something)? Cause I played one of those (#3 I think) and I thought it was awesome.

Age of Empires I&II and Starcraft are awesome and they're 2D.

Well, duh. There's no need to write these down, everyone worth listening to agrees.  Oh and SCII will be awesome too.

But the ultimate game of all time is Minesweeper.

No, Splinter Cell is the Thief-esque game Thief came first, and is an obvious inspiration for Splinter Cell. I'm playing through a cheap copy of Pandora Tomorrow right now, actually. Kind of fun, though the interface is troublesome and some of the politics are rather questionable and offensive, IMO.

I was a huge fan of the ending of the first Splinter Cell game. On the verge of completing your mission, the guards catch you and you stand there with your hands up not daring to move as they talk about how they're going to kill you. . . and then your support team manages to cut the power, killing the lights. The guards, as it turns out, have night vision, but the distraction is enough for you to turn around, take the nearest guy hostage, and wind up in an awesome firefight with about a dozen guards in the dark. Then you go on and assassinate the corrupt politician who has caused all this headache to begin with. Most fun I had in a stealth game in a long time.

MOM was one of my all-time favs. Anyone remember Mail Order Monsters on the Atari computer?

Oh, ok. I just played it the other day. My friend was digging up lost treasures in his closet that day, found it and so we popped it in. Shoulda figured it was pretty old.

Its still awesome though, I wish I had finished it.

There's been some talk of old 2D games being better than 3D games on this thread. I would agree in some instances. They tried to make Lemmings and Worms into 3D games but it was the quaint 2D nature of the game that made them fun.

However a lot of games are better in 3D such as Grand Theft Auto.

On a different topic, remembering these old games perhaps we see them with rose-tinted glasses. I was a big fan of the game Pirates! for the amiga. It was re-released a couple of years ago. It was good, ticked all the right boxes, but I was somehow expecting more, I can't quite put my finger on it, but although the essential elements of the original game were there, I didn't seem to be having as much fun as I remember.

Genre to be reborn: Soon enough turn based strategy games are gonna fit into this category. It seems they are dying (thanks Stardock btw, GalCivII is new to me, but enjoying it!!)

Too true. I would like to see a turn based strategy of WWII. Axis and Allies is too simplistic and the few other strategy games based on this period are real-time or massively complicated like World in Flames, with a rule book approaching 6oo+ pages. Good God man! that's not a rulebook, that's a novel.

If you are talking about the game Axis and Allies, YUCK! That game had more errors than a Dell infested with viruses!

My favorite board game is Risk. Unfortunately, no one around here wants to play it. Favorite strategy game is Rise of Nations.

I'll see your hominid with fangs and raise you one TRex with a grenade launcher I can't tell you how many hours I spent on the Commodore 64 with that game. Between that and Knight Games (oh, and Beachhead), it's a wonder I developed socially at all

I would like to see a tactical MMO again. Like Sierra's The Realm but with more strategy, or the original Neverwinter Nights. What's wrong with turn based combat?

I agree and think its part of the result of "escalation" in the game genre. We want each sequel or next game to be better than before. More options, better graphics, etc, etc. First X wing, then TIE, now Freespace 2. If you really think about it, Xwing doesn't really even compare to the more modern games. If some released a modern X wing, reviewer would complain "Only 4 ships to fly!, Can't choose your weapon load outs!, no difficulty slider!, Multiplayer?!?!etc etc"

Don't get me wrong, I love older games like Xwing and have very fond memories of playing it when I was younger, but I feel that today's modern gamer seems to expect more from a game than we did back then. In 1994, I wanted a game that was fun to play and I could use my imagination to fill in the gaps. In 2007, everyone wants a "total entertainment experience" that does all the work for you.

Well i think of all the time i spent in front of an IBM 286 playing hours and hours of

Space sims.....Wing Commander Privateer, Frontier  (the version that was totaly rough with graphics but huge on what you could do...ie be a pirate or a well gunned merchant.) Star wars Rebellion (RTS)
Flight sims.....Wings over Europe and the pacific(really enjoyed the era dogfights)
Silulation.....Sim City and Sim city 2000. On the amiga..... Ports of call

i still play some games with Diablo and Diablo II but i did hear somewhere a while ago that Blizzard are working on the 3rd installment of this series(not so sure now though)

X-COM has been mentioned a lot already so I'll keep my wish for a dam good successor to this title brief. I want Now! The Cenga titles didn't do it at all for me. I prefer the Classic X-com style.

Dungeon Keeper/2: How I loved this game, especially number 2. We kinda had a simular game released a couple years back with Evil Genius which I enjoyed, but still wasn't Dungeon Keeper! Overlord, while simular in spirit just didn't do it for me.

Syndicate: I remember playing this game ages and ages ago, though to be fair maybe my memory of it is greater than the game actually was. However I think I'd still like to see this game again or at least a game like it.

*A Star Wars total conversion mod for GC2/DA.

*Chrono-Trigger. Re-polish the old classic and let us play it on our next gen consoles/PC. Also make a new game in the line.

*Suikoden 6 where are you. 3 is tied with 5 for my Fav, but 4 still has a bad taste in my mouth.

*Some GENIUS at Squeenix gets the bright idea to make all the final fantasy games released (FF 1 through 10 ) in a compilation playable on next gen consoles/pc. Throw in a free trial or something for FFXI. Peeve: The final fantasy games were not brought over to US shores in order or necessarily on the same console.

*Star Ocean:Till the End of Time has to be one of my favorite Sci-Fi RPG. I'd love to see half a dozen more Star Oceans.

*Front Mission series another damn good series. There's probably not a huge market for TBS tactics games but this series should be a classic. Customizing Mechs and battling it out. Enough said.

Is 5 worthwhile? I liked 2 more than 3 myself, and after hearing bad things about 4, I avoided it and not paid much attention to 5 at all.

You guys hit every one of my favorites so far.

Ditto on X-COM, TIE-Fighter, Syndicate and System Shock 2. Syndicate/Syndicate Wars are sadly undeveloped works of genius IMNSHO and i played them for years. I almost cried when i found out SW wouldn't run on XP, although the game is far from perfect. Same w/ System Shock 2, i still play this one w/the help of TTLG and Rebirth and it still scares the $#%&! out of me sometimes. Personally, if i had my own way, Syndicate would be an MMORPG of the first order, and i GUARANTEE you it would rule the day over WoWarcrack and that *other* thing. . . if properly implimented, anyway. Hell, if i had my way it would BE the red pill.

I'd probably finish off my top 5 with Magic Carpet 2. This one would be on the covers of game magazines for *months* if it were to be combined w/ a fortress-invasion aspect a'la Prince of Persia. I think that it, along with X-COM, have got to be among the most original games ever imagined.

Just my opinions though.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. I've heard so much about it and I'd love to play it but I can't afford the $100+ that it & the expansion are going for nowadays.

Sorry...this made me crack up. Found my copy w/expansion and game guide in original box for $5 at a garage sale.

IMHO 5 is much much more like Suikoden 1 and 2. Infact its my second fave in the series after 2. Didn't really like 3, and 4 I hated with a passion but 5 put the series back on track in my opnion. I liked it anyway.
