What game or genre would you like to be reborn?

What game or genre would you like to be reborn?

For me I loved the old style space dogfighting games like wing commander. I wish they could have a revival. I also liked elite 2 that was awesome. I heard a rumour that elite 4 is in secret development and is due for release in 2013. Im on the edge of my seat for that one, although I will be 30 then but my kids will be 8 and 7, so I can introduce them to the genre woo. Bet they'll be thrilled.

I also like fantasy RPG like diablo (is diablo 3 ever gonna come out or is that dead?). Anyone rememeber Golden Axe for the Amiga? That was cool, that could be reborn as long as they keep the sound effects!

What old game or genre would you like to see make an updated 21st century appearance?

DESCENT 3'ish. I love the genre. Only thing I didn't like about D3 was you're in a ship that can traverse the solar system, but play in maps where you can't exceed about 15mph. I still play through D3 from time to time, ~1/year

What I'd like to see on a new Descent-genre game:
bigger maps, cooler weapons, faster boost, and robotic apendages that reach out and pick up power-ups and install them onto/into your ship, the ability to shut down enemy robots via EMP and reprogram them, or steal their parts. You could eventually release a hord of robots to scour a map, scouting and attacking or infiltrating and relaying telemetry back you you before you actually get too deep. Said apendages would also perform repairs on the ship. Among bigger map ideas could include open space battles while going from mission to mission. An epic-writing thingy would be cool here too if the story line could go alot of different ways, molal decisions and the like.

I want to throw my lot in with another XCom game (and not like that shoddy 3rd one). A game where you were terrified to send your operative around the corner, because you just knew an alien had its blaster trained on the spot and could down you in one hit? Yes please.

I'm surprised there's not more backing for new ShmUps... I can't get enough Gradius, ever.

Along the same vein, I could stand to see a revival of Subspace..loved that little game.

I would also like to see a Prince of Persia game along the lines of the first one.

Oh God, X-Com. . . how much of that game did I play? Too damn much. I remember the worst thing ever was a night terror mission and the first thing you see is a Snakeman. . . rating be damned, I'm sorry, but you civilians are dead already, you just don't know it yet and it's better if you die nice and clean now rather than become a blood-sucking Chryssalid Zombie later. *salutes and opens fire on innocent civilians*. Although as bad as X-Com 1 was that way, X-Com 2 was even worse (I remember huddling my poor soldiers together with their Gauss Rifles as the Lobster Men attacked, hoping that I could down the damn crabs before they killed all my guys. . . and then the glory of achieving Vibroblade technology and outfitting my fastest guys with them and laughing manically as I cut those arthopodic horrors, yelling, "I'm gonna eat you guys with some lemon and drawn butter, mwahahahahahahaha!!!"

Good times.

Best PC Game of All Time: X-COM: UFO Defense   I still have it on an old computer along with some old engineering and surveying programs. I still have the original box, CD, and instruction manual.

We looked into it, but it didn't work out. We're working on a new Fantasy TBS of our own design now though, regardless.

I heard that rumour 3 years ago! I live in hope. My top 3:
1. Master of magic
2. M.U.D.S (Mean Ugly Dirty Sport)
3. Wings

One thing I'm not thrilled about is the mutilation of the Fallout series by Bethesda.

PCG had a preview this month having been able to play the game. Apparently, all the worry is for nothing (it seems all Bethesda have really done with the overall theme is add in a little bit more 'Mad Max' for the East coast). The only problem they highlighted was the VATS combat system, which may or may not work.

Oh, and for those shouting about it, Speedball 2 is being remade - www.speedball2.com

Back OT, I don't think any genre has died enough to be 'remade'. They've just advanced and adapted, for example the side scrolling beat em ups are todays GTA or Dark Messiah. Shoot Em Ups - look at HL2 or any other FPS.
In fact, that's probably the real question. In the twenty - odd years I've been gaming, the power of the home computer has advanced over 100 fold. We have new ways of implementing and interacting with the machines, the internet and a hundred things we never had back then. Yet there's only been perhaps two or three new genres of gaming developed in all that time. It's somewhat dissapointing really, games are still created around the same core concepts and mechanics as they were twenty years ago for the most part, they might have new bells and whistles or flashy 3D graphics, but there's no real change in the basic ideas behind them.

Well, in my opinion, the new pretty 3D graphics are kind of a problem. Many many companies rely on good-looking interface/gameplay to sell a bugged, boring game that has absolutly no depth. I've seen many. The thing is that old games were very limited in graphic technology, so maybe the Devs were working more on the content and depth of the game instead of working on nice graphics. Or maybe it's just a change of mind in the business.

Of course, some games are not like this. Games like HL, HL2, GalCiv2, MoH, etc.

I still play Star Wars Rebellion, because that game has deep strategic content (and really really poor graphics heheh). But unfortunatly for me, with my newest video card drivers (ATI Radeon 9800 Pro), my mouse pointer has become a big black box that hides 1/4 of the screen... so I can't play anymore

If anyone knows of any recent 2D games, could you let me know?

I actually "re-discovered" a game that I have owned for a little more than a year. It's a Russian game called "Space rangers 2." It kinda channels star control a bit (or at least that is what it seems like to me). It's an intersting mix of 2d perspective with some 3d graphics, and pulls it off fairly nicely.

Very addictive, and difficult. I know you can get it online at places like direct to drive and I think I've seen the demo on Star Dock Central.

Yes, you can get SR2 through Stardock now. That's how I got it.

Awesome game.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. I've heard so much about it and I'd love to play it but I can't afford the $100+ that it & the expansion are going for nowadays. I'd also like to see a System Shock 3 as well as a new Thief game. I'd be thrilled beyond words if they ever decided to make a real version of Shadowrun for the PC instead of that FPS butchering they did.

Yep thats the one. I loved the old Amiga days. It used to take about 10mins to load up a new map for civilisation!

BioShock is going to be its spiritual successor. But, yeah, I'd love to see an actual System Shock 3. I'm afraid it's never going to happen, though.

oh I forgot I was a big fan of the Lucasarts adventure games such as monkey island. I know that genre is dead but it is rare nowadays to see a game with such detailed content. The only one I could think of is Deus ex. Its a shame that not many games have followed that path as I believe the orignal Deus ex expertly combined a detailed story in a colourful environement. Deus Ex 2 was dissppointing as it didn't have the same depth. It kinda lost its edge as it was launched on consoles as well.

I can think of a few PC games that were exceptional but their sequels did not live up to them as they were launched on consoles as well, deus ex 2, rainbow 6, thief to name a few. Hope the trend doesn't continue and quality is put before cheap short term profits, but I won't hold my breath.

Did anyone ever play sacrifice?

It was kinda like fantasy battlezone. Actually, Did anyone ever play battlezone (1 or 2)?

Those games were jewels. I'm surprised that no one has really explored that genre, especially with the advances in graphics and AI. Sacrifice was, by far, my favorite. The environment (artristically and practically speaking) and characters really made up for the more or less cliche plot.

I would love if they made a spiritual heir to sacrifice, especially if they fix some of the balance issues of the original. That game was soo fun!

Good ol Monkey Island....I love that game, to bad it doesn't run on my PC anymore.

Actually, Thief 2 was quite brilliant. Much better than the first, which hasn't aged as well, though was still a great concept.

Thief, System Shock, and Deus Ex were all made by the same team, lead by this guy. Reading through his list of games is like reading through a list of the games I loved to play. Can't wait to see what else he comes up with.

yeah thief 2 was better than thief though thief 3 didn't live up to its potential

Alpha Centauri is perhaps the biggest reason why I can't get into Civ 4. Sure it has all kinds of updated features and game mechanics, but AC had a STORY. The factions all had their individual goals and agendas, and allowed me to project my own personal beliefs into the game (for example, I usually end up as the Gaians or the Planet Cult given my own personal eco-friendly views, and no matter who I played, Miriam and her fanatics always Always ALWAYS have to die). Compared to that, the nations in Civ 4 seem to be different flavors of the same cookie.

Seconds to all the Freespace 2 and TIe fighter fans. HOMM V does NOT suck. And here's hoping Sins of a Solar Empire turns out to be awesome.

I agree SMAC took some giant steps forward in turn based strategy games that I don't thin newer games have emulated which is a shame. Though galciv2 is a great modern game, I think SMAC is still stonger in a lot of areas, even though its almost a decade old.

My friend talked about playing Alpha Centauri as the Human Hive, winning the game, sitting back and feeling satisfied. . . for about ten seconds before he realized what a horrible thing he'd just done by uniting the entire world under an oppressive totalitarian regime.

Two words: TWISTED METAL!!!!

I've always been a fan of these games, and would love to see a new ame from the folks at Incognito Entertainment.

(Also, I'm debating weather or not to change my screenname to a TM car.)

I liked the old strategy games. 2D style! Anyone played Submarine Titans? A very old game. Age of Empires I&II and Starcraft are awesome and they're 2D. I just don't understand why everything is going 3D these days.
