How did the AI's influence jump so quickly?

I'm playing the asteroid map (DA) against the Drengins Arceans and Yor. I'm kickin butt (beginner level because I'm pretty new to this game). I have 6 planets to the Arcean's 1 planet and my influence is really pushing in on him. Suddenly I hit end turn and his influence nearly doubles! It envelopes one of my planets and 2 of my morale mines. I planted a spy on their home planet to see what they might have built to do this but saw nothing out of the ordinary. Does anybody know what might have happened? Thanks in advance.

I'm going to build a bunch of fighters and take his planet by force now, but I really wasn't looking to have to resort to this in order to win.

Sounds like he could of built a mine on an influence resource somewhere. Have you looked for one of those?

No. The only bonus on their planet was a 100% research bonus. Do you think this might be a bug or is there some super-project the Arceans could have completed?

Resources are out in space not on planets.

You can buy influence,,,, oh wait your playing DA,,, so you cannot buy squat, but yea, the AI can still buy things from each other, so he must have bought a load of influence off somone.

Well there were no influence resources to be had on this map, so they must have bought influence from someone else.

I forgot to mention this: the turn where the Arcean's influence jumped, there was a little video segment that said that the Arcean's culture was becoming (I'm paraphrasing here) the latest fad and all the other civilizations were copying them. Does this help answer my puzzle?

In DL at least, there are random events that can either increase or decrease influence.
