Minor race techs

In the raceconfig xml, most of the minor races are given the tech:

Code: xml
<Tech>Root</Tech>

. What does this mean exactly? Are these races given every tech at the beginning of every tech branch? I tried using this on a custom race of mine but it did nothing when I played as them.

I suspect that this tech puts them "on" the tech tree and allows them to develop additional techs, even if they do not start with any at all in certain branches. Hence it would do nothing for a custome race with several 1st order techs.

Yup i agree with drrider. I messed with this myself and saw nothing, the only conclusion was that it was what allowed access to the tech tree.
