Revenge of the Pirates

I was doing a skirmish, and the Pirates stole two of my planets. It was tragic. One of them was far away, so I decided I would try to buy the other one. I put the planet into the trade window, but when I clicked on putting in money, from my side, the game crashed. It crashed multiple times. I think it crashed even after I had done one turn, but I am not completely certain.

So I got the Altarians to attack the Pirates and swooped in when they were weak. Bwahahhaa.

(Note: it may not have been pirates- maybe Dread Pirates or something?)

But the real point is it crashed whenever I tried to offer money to a minor race for a planet that used to be mine.

maybe Dread Pirates or something

It was likely the Dread Lords then--the pirates don't get any troop transports or planets AFAIK.

What version of the game are you running, and do you have a saved game where you can reproduce contacting them? If it was indeed the Dread Lords, you shouldn't be able to talk to them at all (or the Pirates, for that matter). So even the act of contacting them would be a bug.

I have a question related only to pirates in that I had previously tried to make a post about pirates, which never appeared anywhere int eh forums.

Granted, my post may have been a little dull... But i don't see why it wouldn't have appeared at all. I'm relatively new, is there a time-limit on when someone can post? I have been able to reply to other posts since I first registered, but found those didn't appear right away.

And in general, I was asking how it could be that pirates could suddenly have a higher-tech and bigger fleet than the top civilizations in the game. I hadn't seen it before, but if other people are losing planets/having the game ruined, then i guess it may be more common than I'd thought.

The prev report about Pirates stealing 2 planets was not really about Pirates, probably Dread Lords. Pirates simply do not take planets.

The 'Pirates kill every moving ship' situation that you are talking about is one of the Mega Events in Dark Avatar (see how it is Mega?). THOSE Pirates are special; they generally have better weapons tech and miniaturization than anyone when they enter the game. You can turn off Mega Events when you are starting a game, on the first set up screen.

On the other hand, you can also learn to cope with the super Pirates. Remember, the Pirates are amoral; they wax the ships of EVERYBODY. One way to cope with them is to simply shift to internal development and research while everyone ELSE is struggling with them. Their weakness is that they never get reinforcements, so each loss even in one sided battles where they kill a fleet (hopefully someone else's) is permanent. Also they don't move around much unles provoked, so you can hide the remnants of your fleet off in remote corners of the map if you can onec get separated from them. Then do your research and upgrade remotely. Eventually the remaining Pirates will be weakened enough, and your tech will be good enough that you can come out again.

Actually, I found the pirate mega-event to be a gift allowing me an easy victory. I was humming along pretty good, my economy running really well, lots of money and population, but no military to speak of. I was just getting ready to start mixing things up when a whole busload of pirates showed up and started killing everything in sight. I didn't bother to fight them. They were doing a nice job of wiping out everyone else's defences. I simply built a transport loaded with engines and set my governor to build it on EVERY world. I simply flooded the map with them and invaded every planet. The ships were so fast that it was easy to dodge the pirates and the planets were easy pickings. I took over every planet in no time and won the game.
