I Need 3D YOUR help with simple meshes!

Please help me finish some jewels

I need help! I designed new textures to go on some of the spherical/ hemispherical GC2 jewels. Unfortunately, the original meshes are too course and irregular, and the results look pretty lame. I have tried three different 3D graphics programs, and the learning curve is just too steep for me. These should be very easy for a real 3D designer. If someone could make the -.X files for these jewels, I would be eternally in their debt.

1: a sphere that attaches to harpoints at its center, no hardpoints, in the approximate size range of the original "light" jewels

2: same as 1, with a normal size range (ala the modules);

3: a hemisphere that attaches at the center (of the original sphere), and extends maybe 10 degrees past the equator on all sides (so there aren't any gaps under it when it attaches to a surface), in the approximate size range of the original "light" jewels;

4: same as 3, with a normal size range.

TEXTURES: Each would have two textures, one centered on the north pole, one on the south, with their edges meeting at the equator.

POLYGON COUNT: enough that the shape of the texture isn't significantly distorted. Sphere approximations (like the ones in Blender) would be fine.

Please post a reply or e-mail me if you are interested in helping. You will recieve credit for your help in every implementation, my eternal grattitude, and loads of good modding karma.

For anyone who isn't sure why this might be a big deal, here are a couple samples using the sphere (left) and dome (right) models I have:

I'm not sure if this will help but i know 2 graphic programs that might help, Anim8tor and 3D Plus 2. 3D Plus 2 would be my favourite, it's quite easy to use.

it doen't have hard points yet. this is just an example of what 3D Plus can do.

I Plan to make this a ship chassis. this is what 3D Plus can do Graphics wise.

sorry i didn't mean to put it up twice. i'll try and find more programs.

I'm very sure that Lightwave adds Hard Points. you should try and see if that works.

knka,

Did you just make that? Are you some kind of god? That is absolutely fantastic! I had been hoping for more generic sphere and hemispheres, because I have a lot of textures premade, but if I could get something like that, I would happily rework the dome textures to fit it.

Is there any way I can get that mesh? Not to be too particular, but maybe without the little "stem"?

Thanks!

GP

PS. Many many thanks LostHero... I just don't have the time to try any more programs right now, but I'll check those out when I can.

Well if you send me the textures to: [email protected] I'll see what I can do with them, if they are like you describe in the original post it shouldn't be much of a problem to put them on any kind of model.

If you want to give it a try yourself here's a zip file with the model (in 3ds format) with all the sub-materials ready. Also in the file is a "texture" map that if you paint I could use to apply to the model. Everything white in it will be visible on the model. Also the 10 upper parts are in sequence so if you want the "lights" (like from the example picture you provided) in a certain way just go from top left to bottom right.

Example to show the size of the model.

EDIT: And no I'm no god in 3D modeling (just been hobbying around doing it for the last 10 years or so). Domes are pretty easy to do though.

EDIT2: Oh and here's a really good beginner's guide to UVW mapping objects in 3ds max:

KK,

That looks absoulutely fabulous! I'll e-mail you. And haven't you seen Ghostbusters? "... if someone asks you if you are a god, you say YES!"

Ok... in that case may i ask something of you, Please tell me what program you used to create those domes and does it add 'hard points'?

Sorry, I didn't make them... the first is a re-texturing of the model of the "light" jewels from GC2, and the other is a part from one of the demo ships. You should be able to do what you need to do in Blender (which is free)... I suppose. They say hardpoints are "null on the model," which I assume means you add an element that consists of a disembodied point(?!?!?!). Good luck!
