Protection Treaty idea

I hate to start a whole new "what i wanna see.." topis, but i had this idea i was wondering what my fellow players thought of it.

A new treaty i guess you could call it. Where someone pays you every turn (amount is negotiated in the trade screen) to protect them. That is you will fight who ever starts a war with them. Or you can pay an AI money to fight for you.

WHY? First this can keep some of the weaker races in the game. Especially the minors. If the Krynn are getting paid to protect one, they won't be so easy to just wipe away when you or an AI feels like having their planet.

second it can be a good way to make more tribute income. or enabling you to concentrate on research and pay some one to fight for you. this is more than just trading cash for a declaration of war. This would be a good use of the Korx who are otherswise no so useful.

The rules can be something like:

- you can not start a war with someone you are protecting. you must first cancel the treaty, and then wait a turn. You will not be able tostart the war, sa screen will tell you that you have to wait a week.

- you have no choice bvut to fight. a questio will not even be asked, but a screen will tell you that due to someone attacking them you are now at war with the other race.and that race is at war with you.

- maybe they can be secret so no one really know what tehey can be getting themselves into. Or NOT.

i'm sure there can be others...

so what do you guys think?

... It honestly sounds like an alliance. The money involved makes it look like paying another civ. to start a war with your enemy. Both these things you can do already...

But I like the tribute thing. You should talk to the Stardock guys about it. =P

Agreed, it does look very similar to that, but a weak civ can never form an alliance. Some other differences are:
-With an alliance you can still choose to back out if your ally is attacked.
-This treaty is a one-way street.
-When paying a civ to go to war, its immediate and definite. This is a just-in-case thing.
-In order to even get an alliance you have to be on close terms with the civ. In this case you can even have a civ that practically hates you accept an offer to protect you if the money is right. the stronger your military or the greater the difference in militaries the more you can charge. And its paid weekly until one side decides to end to business relationship. I think some players might like to get rich off their strong military.

I was really thinking of this because of what happens to the minors all the time. This way they can last, and if you are getting money from them you may be able to tolerate their existance longer. But i still think it can work for the majors too.

I basically like anything that adds strategy to the TBS. Something to think about and to choose.

I really like this idea.
But if you don't have an adequate military you're seen as an easy prey and would get attacked anyway and your protector with you, or the other way around. To solve the problem the party being protected should 'acquire' the military status of its protector. If the Drengin protect me, my military power should be seen as that of the Drengin, so the the AI knows that it is not attacking an defenseless prey.
I don't know if i worded this correctly but i hope that you get the meaning of it.

Cool, but they way i see it. if you were to attack the Dark Yor for instance, a screen would come up and tell you that if you attack them the Drengin will declare war on you. Just like when you attack someone, only in this cae the name of a third (or maybe even forth) party will appear. They you can click "no" that you really dont want to do that. The AI will also "know" that if they attack they will be dealing with other races.

I'd like to see a way to make another race your vassel. Instead of destroying a race you make it pay tribute, contribuate to research, and make it vote in your favor. But you would then be bound to protect it. The conquered race would then not be able to make treaties with other races.

What im suggesting is just like that. I mean if you're in a position to obliterate an AI and you chose to give them a peace treaty, as weak as they must be at that point you can offer to protect them and they will pay you weekly. As a good race you can call it benevolence, as an evil race you can see it as being an overlord or something like that.

Maybe as an alternative to money, or in conjustion with it, you can offer protection in excahnge for getting an new tech they develop. Unless this seems to make this realationship TOO powerful. I mean for a one-planet race it wont be a big deal. But if its a race thats great with research just bad with military, you might be getting too much. But i guess the trade screen calculation can figuere all that in. sort of like it presumably does when trading economic and research treaties.

I like the vassal idea. You could earn a huge manufacturing bonus for making them your slaves, or a soldiering bonus. etc (which isn't exactly the same thing but atleast they get to live  ).

But can you enlightmen me on what an economic and research treaty is? I never figured out what they do in the game. =P
