Slowing down on large maps

I played DA on medium map and the speed of the game was good. From the very first turn to 100 turns in, it only took 1second for the turn to end when I click the 'end turn' button.

Hoever, when I played on large maps or bigger, it took 3-6seconds for the turn to end when I click the 'end turn' button. This occurs after 50 turns or more. Is this a bug? or a memory problem?

Well, you don't say how much memory you have...
But it is probably a combination of factors.

If you have less than 2GB on the larger maps you will have more slowdowns as the game has to swap out to virtual. It gets over a gig in usage fairly early on.

And, on larger size maps there is just more for the AI to keep track of, so the turns may take a little longer to calculate.

I'm running on Centrino, 1.6GHz, 1.25MB RAM with ATI x300 graphics card.

Yup, I have no problems when running on medium maps or smaller. It only starts to get slower on large maps during the mid and late game.

It's to be expected then. As Moosetek says, there's just a lot more stuff going on that the computer has to process and keep track of on bigger maps. So turns will take longer, no bug or problem at all.

Alright.. I understand the situation. I guess either I get a better laptop, or I stick to medium maps or just wait slightly longer on larger maps.

On the larger maps - dual opeteron 2.4ghz dual cores (4 cores total), 4 gigs memory, 6800gt card, still get slow down. Never had it this bad before the 1.6 versions.

Hmmm... does it mean the AI threads are overloading the system on larger maps? I heop stardock looks into this.

It is not really something that needs to be looked into.
There is more processing being done, so naturally it takes more cpu time to complete the task.
The system isn't being 'overloaded' as such, it is however being fully utilized for a longer period of time. And from what I understand from the latest version, there have been a couple more options added that could increase the load.

If it is slowing down too much, try turning off the advanced AI options for using more cpu time. It will dumb them down somewhat, but it is a trade-off between faster and smarter. Smarter is simply going to use more cpu.

I'm been using 'Normal' CPU time ever since my first game of DA. I tried once at 'Advance' CPU and the game slowed down tremendously even when I'm only at my tenth turn.

I'm wondering, does the enhanced ships rendering slow the processing down?

Rendering options do squat. AI options same. In fact, with all options on the game uses two CPU cores only to about 70% on my system.

Tested all configs possible that I can think of or that can be suggested. Willing to test more with whatever stardock recommends.

I love that when I'm in the menu changing options that I get about 190 fps.

Mo2k, chanborthers, you're both having different problems.

chanbrothers is simply having slower turn changes on bigger maps. That's completely normal and to be expected when there's that much more stuff going on in the game.

Mo2k is having framerate issues, which is something else entirely.

Actually - I have frame rate issues and the turn changes are also slow - I think it is all related as detailed in https://forums.galciv2.com/?aid=153449#1234511 If this is normal it was never this bad in 1.5 and in earlier GC2's. Perhaps too many options added - AI going out of control and overthinking?

I will try a radical fix on my end: upgrade from a 6800gt to a 8xxx series card with 640mb of memory. I'll get the card from Fry's Electronics this way I can return it if it makes no difference. I personnaly think that so much processing is going on that it's affecting the graphics engine - even though none of my cores are ever pegged 100% while running gigantic maps.

EDit: meh, new vid card just makes the fps a little bertter (~15)... until you select a ship and watch out ... 0.8 again.
