ADDITIONAL PLANETARY SETTING CHOICE

Incorporate some of the more successful Civilization-specific gameplay features into the Galactic Civilization series

ADDITIONAL PLANETARY SETTING CHOICE:

These suggestions would in all likelihood constitute either: (i) an extremely ambitious mod, (ii) a major GC2 patch or (iii) a potentially interesting feature to incorporate into GC3.

While I fully realize that the depiction (and corresponding ingame management) of the individual planets in GC2 is (by gameplay design) a somewhat abstract exercise, would it however be feasible to offer the player some additional options for planetary settings (especially with respect to the grid size setting as the current default 6x12 grid is imho really small)?

Perhaps (as a possible solution) the present "Galaxy Setup" page could be augmented with a new "Planetary Settings" row with the following options:

GRID SIZE (mirroring Galaxy size)

Tiny (5x10 grid)
Small (10x20 grid)
Medium (20x40 grid)
Large (40x80 grid)
Huge (60x120 grid)
Gigantic (100x200 grid)
Custom

However (and this is actually a fairly important consideration), the actual footprint (functional grid size) of each planet must be directly proportional to its size. (i.e. a tiny planet will only occupy a comparatively small portion of a gigantic grid whereas a really large planet will fill it).

UTILIZABLE TILES

Rare
Uncommon
Occasional
Common
Abundant

This is seemingly the logical extension of the grid size request – whereby the player can decide how involved s/he wishes to become in the development of the individual planets in his/her empire. While I (again) realize that this gameplay aspect should be viewed in more abstract terms, it just seems somewhat strange that Earth can only initially support 10 utilizable tiles.

The advantages of such an addition to GC2:

It is well known that the designs of the Galactic Civilization and Civilization series share a fair amount in common. Galactic Civilization naturally has a far more ambitious (and epic) setting – potentially featuring hundreds of stars and thousands of planets (whereas Civilization is limited to a single planet which is correspondingly featured in considerably more detail).

However, I see no major reason why it might not be possible to incorporate some of the more successful Civilization-specific gameplay features into the Galactic Civilization series. For instance, it would surely be a "good thing" to include the option of a series of more detailed (Civilization-type) planets that could possibly feature the Public Works included in the Civilization: Call to Power series. This might require a greater level of micromanagement but it would (imho) substantially increase the importance of each and every planet in ones emerging empire.

There's no way that this could be implemented with a mod, and it would take a complete overhaul to change the grid size.

I also think that it would be a bad idea to increase the grid size.  You can have 900+ planets on a gigantic galaxy. That's 900x100x200 tiles to deal with.  In order to make that remotely playable, now you have to have improvements that take multiple tiles, which adds more complexity, and would require more micromanagement.

I'm sure we said this somewhere in the manual, but the grid is purely representative.  You're not just building one factory.  It's representative. 1/10th of your planet's useable land is being devoted to factories.  You fill in some swamps, you get another cell.  Etc.

Thank you so much for your most informative reply.

I must admit that (probably unlike the vast majority of the other GC2 players) I am more of a "builder" than a "warrior" (although I am rather partial to large tactical battles). I would therefore actually welcome the option of being able to eventually manage to develop all of my planets into (especially) a series of major economic or industrial "Power Houses" to drive my "Military Machine".

However, I fully realize that this prolonged "economic domination" strategy will not (in all likelihood) prove a particularly enjoyable option for the average GC2 player. I suppose that one could (possibly) manage to achieve a workable "faxsimile" of this hugely expansive economic strategy by playing a really large Custom Size map (possibly even larger than the "Map of Hell 3.0").

With kindest regards
