1.6 game crushes when I try to move on from Galaxy Setup when starting a new game

As the title says. The game suddenly crushes on me when I try to move on from galaxy setup, to select the faction I want play as. If someone could help me I'd be grateful.

As a note, if you are running Dark Avatar 1.6 on Vista, your debug.err will be in Documents\My Games\GC2DarkAvatar along with the prefs.ini file.

If deleting the prefs.ini fixes the crashes, it's probably something to do with your resolution.

I generally recommend setting your resolution to the same resolution as your desktop, particularly if you're running in widescreen.  The debug.err reports your desktop resolution in a line like this:

Current Display Mode: 1280 x 800 (32 bit) (60Hz)

The first value is the width, the second is the height. You can set the display width and height manually in the Prefs.ini if you can't get to the Options screen.  You can also try setting Fullscreen=0 to run in window; if the window is the same size as your current display mode, it will still appear fullscreen.  Some people actually get better performance in a window.

I had the same problem and sent in both the debug file and smart exp. file to Stardock error reporting (BTW great responce for a weekend  )

In reading the posts of those before me I changed all the backround star density, nebula, planet texture by reducing all by one value. I also reset my custom race settings and saved them anew for 1.6. So far this has worked, the problem is now the spikes extending from the ships are back. I can live with this though thanks to the other improvements.

Don't ask me why it worked but it did.

Spyrer,

You can try this to get rid of the spikes:

1. Close Dark Avatar and open your prefs.ini file in notepad.

2. Find the following line:
      TransformCoordArrayFix=0
    And change it to:
      TransformCoordArrayFix=1

3. Save the file

4. Restart Dark Avatar.

If anyone still has a copy of their old prefs.ini in their recycle bin, and deleting it fixed the problem, could you please email both the new and deleted versions to [email protected] so we can compare them?  Thanks.

I've ended up getting brutal--went for a DA uninstall, manually deleted DA folders, reinstalled from CD and updated via SDC. I was getting fairly stable sessions under beta 4 or 5, but now I get the CTD after the galaxy screen during setup.

Do y'all still want debug.err & prefs files from sub-spec folks like me or should we finally break down and get cards that will run DX9 properly?

ok my game works fine now (odd)
but i still dont know where to download the 1.6 update
it says to go to stardock central but thers no way to download it
Reply #33 Top
Sushistrip, are you using the Stardock Central application? You can download SDC from https://www.stardock.com/products/sdcentral/ . AFAIK, there is no standalone executable that you can download to update Dark Avatar.

If you're running the game on an older graphics system, you might be better off not trying 1.6 just yet. It seems like several of us fight-the-upgrades folks are finally losing functionality that we were never promised in the first place...

Yes, go ahead and send them in.  If you need an excuse to go buy a new video card, don't let us stop you, but in the meantime we need more info about this problem.

Yes, that might be a problem. I used to have problems with older versions of iTunes when I was developing Political Machine.  Try it with iTunes unloaded.  You should also open Task Manager, click on Processes, sort by Image Name, and right click on iTunesHelper.exe and choose EndProcess. Do the same for iPodService.

(way off topic but i cant find a post to reply in so ya)
how dou enable mods on the game
in the options screen in the mods list, the mod i downloaded doesnt show up
???

sushistrip, you could have created your own post.

Did your mod come as a zip file? If so, you just need to unzip it.

i had the same problem and my star density was at zero as well. i bumped my setting up to 1 and no problems since. out of curiosity i tried setting it BACK to 0 and got that crash. it also happens if i try to load a game in progress with star density at 0. it loads but as soon as i try to render any of the graphics outside the load screen i got a ctd with that nice standard "we're sorry but galciv 2 has encountered an error blah blah". every thing plays fine with a density of 1 though

no it didnt come in a zip its (its a mod to change the way weapons look and sound when fired in battles) thers like 3 files; data, sfx, gfx
i just deleted(made a backup copy first) the old weapon looks and sounds and copied and pasted the new "designs" into ther respective folders in galciv2 DA folder but is ther an easier way?

sushistrip, if you're using Stefan's weapon FX pack, you can ask him for help directly over on his thread.

Ok, I think I found the culprit :
When I put choose the "low" preset video options, I get the crash, but not when I take "Med". I found out that removing the "Disable Point Sprite" option prevent the crash.

I would guess that it is not video card dependant, but that only those with old cards do use the "low" preset.

ok thnx kyro
(by the way, to any ppl frustrated with lag, if u hav a web accelerator (like google web accelerator) running and u turn it off, it reaaaaaaaaaaally increases the performence of the game?)
=D
