Strange Victory

Did AI stop functioning?

Played Yor on large, masochistic, 4 AIs, stars scattered, no cheats and completed a cultural victory. But it was a strange experience. About halfway through the game it seemed almost as if the AI had stopped functioning. I had managed to colonise planets around the Drengin, Drath, Krox and Torians and after that I didnt have to do anything except keep on expanding to cover all space.

Didnt even bother developing any weapons and defenses.

Seemed very unnatural.

The game did freeze at some stage (playing on Vista, nVidia card, driver 158.18) and I had to Cntrl+Alt+Del and kill process to retart. Wonder if that has anything to do with this.

Has anyone else faced this kind of problem? Can the AI thread simply stop responding?

I have a few save games at different stages. Unfortunately its not a metaverse game. Can anything be made of it?

Set to whatever was default (random I think). Can it be checked ingame? That is if I load a saved game can I find out AI intelligence level?

Yes. Go to foreign relations screen, stats tab. Under 'misc' the AI level is listed.

Spot on. The AI intelligence levels were 'beginner'. No wonder the game was so awful. One lives and learns everyday. Thanks.

Well, but if you had it set to Masochistic, then they shouldn't have been at beginner level. Sounds like either a bug or something wrong with how the game is interacting with your computer configuration. If you still have a saved game from that game, it would probably be worth it to send it to [email protected] and explain what happened. Only if you're sure you had it set to Masochistic, though. It could just be human error . I've had a few of those!

Was definitely masochistic. Will try and send save games to Stardock. The game did crash once as I mentioned and maybe that had something to do with it. Now I am checking intelligence as and when I come across a civ - most are godlike and few are genius level - sounds scary  .

Incidentally is there any point to taking down a godlike civ in preference to genius in the early game phase (given that other things are roughly similar)?

I must also say that this galciv forum is probably the sanest and most helpful game forum that I have come across in a long while. Really nice.

Did you Ctrl-N at all at the start of the game? At least before the patches, people seemed to agree that doing that reset the intelligence of all the AI's, and you may have gotten unlucky.

Nopes. No Ctrl+N. Havent had to do that so far .

I have had intelligence reset after using cntrl+n and also once when i did not! After installing latest patches, problem solved.

I had a similar thing happen to me and it had me scratching my head. Then I realized that my remaining opponents hadn't researched Plague Cure and had like 3 people left on every planet. Normal Diff game, but geez, that's really pretty dumb AI play.
