Tournament of Losers! - Running June 6th to July 15th!

Tournament of Losers!

From June 6 (starting tomorrow) until July 15th, I'm running an unofficial tournament. All players who own Dread Lords or Dark Avatar are welcome and encouraged to participate.

The Scene

Wyndstar recently ran a Battle Royale Tournament (I have wholeheartedly stolen the format, some of the text and the rules of his original OP for this post! I don't think he will mind. And I would certainly like to thank him!) Three races came out at the bottom as clear losers, nicely balanced across alignments. But which one is really the worst to play?

All three races have timidly retreated to their corners of the galaxy, showing their true cowardice, lack of ability and lack of skill. The Iconians have joined them...Just because they are a loser race too! Which one will be forced even deeper into its corner? Which one truly deserves to be extinct?

The Rules

Who Wins: The Race which scores the highest when the raw scores of all the submissions are added up at the end of the tournament will win.

Who Loses: The Race which scores the least number of points by the end of the tournament. This race will be crowned the Grand Galactic Loser. Help keep your favorite loser race from being the king of the losers!

Tournament Length: This Tournament runs from June 6th to July 15th. On July 15th, I will post the results of the tournament. I will try to do regular interim updates.

Submissions: Every skirmish matters! To submit your score to the tournament, simply post to this message with a screenshot from your metaverse profile.

Only games with a date in the lower right hand corner that were submitted between June 6th and July 15th will be accepted. No cheat flagged games will be accepted. If there is a question about the validity of any score, it will be resolved by referring to that players official metaverse profile by me. For this tournament, games played by the races listed below will be counted. Players are free to submit as many games as they choose as long as they are legal metaverse submissions within the appropriate date range.

If you have problems taking a screenshot, please post the date, score, race and character profile where the metaverse game you wish to submit can be found.

Feel free to include a blurb about your experience playing your chosen loser race!

So who will lose? Which race is really the worst? Was I right to unilaterally include the Iconians? Your games will decide the answers!

Good luck to all!

Final Scores:

1. Drengin: 598585
2. Altarian: 370825
3. Iconians: 324800
4. Arcean: 226500

Let me be the first to denounce the Arceans as the Grand Galactic Losers. Yes, they are the race so inept that they can't even successfully pilot a starship into a sun to end their own existence and so cowardly that they can't manage to end their own existence through any other way. The good races think they are to pathetic to bother with, the other neutrals fail to notice them, the Drengin will not enslave and the Korath will not spore them, because they are looking to enslave and spore intelligent races. They must forever wander the galaxy begging other races to put them out of their misery and end their pitiful existence.

All may now dis and disdain the Arceans, the Grand Galactic Losers.

Usually you don't poke anything that is potentially deadly, just things it would be annoying to get bitten by...You poke deadly animals with rifles from a distance!

`sighs`

a whopping 250 points. I lost. Horribly. Don't know what I'm doing wrong. If ANYONE is willing to coach me on this game, I would appreciate it. Because I'm obviously doing something wrong to be constantly losing.

My Drengin game is getting close to finished. The Arceans have just fallen and only the Drath remain from the original 9. Their economy is in shambles, while mine is through the roof. My military took a beating from the Arceans, but will recover pretty quickly. I only have two troop transports and one fleet of medium missile ships left, other than my myriad tiny engineless defenders. It might be enough.

No gaming for me for the next couple of days, but I'll finish this one up before too long.

I understand your frustration. Not long ago, I was searching for some ideas and I mostly got "just play and have fun" thrown back at me. Really sucks out loud to get that. I, and I'm sure the rest of the Evil Empire, would be glad to help with whatever ideas we can come up with. The Galactic Diplomats are also a great source of direct, no BS information. Wyndstar talks straight and has also helped a lot of people here.

I've posted in the game talk forum about the game that I lost horribly. I'll post it here as well.

A bunch of you have been wondering what I usually do during my games(especially the game that I lost by tech). So, I'm going to give you a rough draft of what I do, from what I can remember.

Ok, so new game, everyone on abundant, fast tech and random map size. chose 4 random opponents(I was drengin(sp??)). Game started off with me putting 1 of each building that I started out with, then alternating between research and factory. I colonized the planet next to me(I should note that I had 20% PQ selected, luck selected and something else that I can't remember, atleast i think I had that. No wait, I had weapons, soldiering, ship hp, and something else). On that planet, I put 3 research on there(I'm thinking I should of put econ instead). Now, by the end of the first month, one of the opponents(the one that has a brown arua) had quite a few planets already and as such, had a good portion of the map convered by influence. The com's ended up litterally boxing me in. I had colonized another planet, but that got invaded and taken over.

My research, for the most part, was concentrating on weapons and armor. I got a couple of lucky breaks by getting 2 ranger class ships.(the Precursor events were going off like fireworks this game). Figuring that I had some time to build up decent ships, I kept researching. After a couple of months, Thalan came up, and did wave after wave after wave of invasions. He then proceeded to successfully invade my home planet(by this time, my other class 4 planet was taken over).

So, what was i doing wrong, you may ask me? I really don't know. The com's seemed to move way too fast for me to be able to get any decent amount of planets. I'm thinking of going to a larger map size. Beyond that, I'm clueless as to what I am doing wrong. I don't knwo whether it's because I'm not moving fast enough or what.

Any help or coaching would be greatly appreciated. I'd even be willing to hop on msn after work to discuss. but, please, any help would be appreciated. Also, saying "kick a$$ early" doesn't really help since I need to have a really good grasp of what needs to be done before I can do that.

@The Mad Dragon: What difficulty were you playing on? Also, I have found that the smaller map games w/ a lot of opponents are usually the more difficult ones, because there is a higher likelihood of having wars. The Thalans just doing that to you though, hasn't happened to me just yet thankfully. I suggest trying out the All-Factory game. It is effective, and even with it I was able to dominate my opponents in Research all through the game, and it also able to grab a lot more planets from being able to switch my focus over to Military whenever I needed to.

About the Precursor events where you get the Ranger class ships...I hate that event soooo much. I actually had to give them to my opponents to make the game more interesting when I would get them. Had them in this one game with the Yor, turned into a very long game cuz they kept getting the little Corvettes from the Precursors.

I suggest getting a few ships early on with minimal technology, just to act as sentries for your defending planets. That way you have accomplished 2 things:
___1) You have gained military strength and may divert war-eyes from your territory
___2) You have defended your planets and made suprise invasions impossible.

Now about that, for planets deep in enemy territory, I would suggest putting a defender there that can actually do something other then act as a placeholder in the invader line. Also, I learned this one when dealing w/ the Dread Lords in the DA campaign, make purely sensor ships and set them up a little ways from your planets. This will give you a good idea of when the Transports are going to be coming, and might give you enough time to stop them.

I hope that is good advice, it is what I fight with right now.

I'm playing on Normal difficulty atm.

This may sound noobish, but how does the all-factory strat work? And how were you able to dominate your opponents with research?

Okay, playing as Drengin is not the way to win a Tech victory. You have to win Militarily. some may disagree but.... Also get in lots of MINOR RACES and after 1 or 2 years you can trade techs for economy and research treaties with all of them. And as MottiKhan says, join us at the Tyranny of EVIL or the Hitchikers of the galaxy and you will receive a lot more useful help. And remember no poking sleeping animals with sticks or anything else that is attached to your body.

Okay, in the "all-factory strat," you build no tech buildings at all. In order to get research you use focus. And by getting a number of planets as well as a huge number of factories and Stock markets I was able to focus over to research withoout actually putting any spending % into it. This also makes it easy to convert 100 % of my industry to social, military, or ~25% to research at any time.

I hope that helps a bit, and it really wasn't a noobish question.

Here's a few quick tips for you Dragon... these have worked well for me. Your mileage may vary.

1) Buy a factory on your homeworld turn 1. This jumpstarts everything...

2) Keep building factories on your homeworld until the colony rush is over. This will help you build colony ships and/or constructors FAST.

3) I research speed to Impulse II, Miniaturization, then sensors. Once sensors is complete, build at least 2 survey ships to gobble up a majority of the anomalies. (Side note: in my first Drengin game my flagship had almost 40HP by the time the anomalies were exhausted (huge galaxy). I quickly researched medium ship building and within a few turns had the single most dominant ship in the galaxy. Loaded with missiles, this ship almost single handedly conquered the Torians).

4) I like to put a morale building on each planet early in the game. Later, I build over them with econ buildings. This allows me to grow pop fast and once max pop is reached tax them well.

5) Turn off tech trading.

6) If you see a minor race, kill it. Those planets make great Econ/Tech capitals.

7) Research all invasion techs. The AI doesn't seem to prioritize this path. Use this to your advantage.

... that's all for now. The Drengin call...

Ok, my next question.

What abilities should I take. I've reset the Drengin abilities. I'm thinking along the lines of soldiering, weapons, ship hp, etc. I've seen what high soldiering can do. Thoughts?

At the Painful difficulty level I have had success with speed+2, pop+10%. Getting to planets, anamolies, and resources the fastest is the single most challenging part of the game. Win this phase and the rest is CAKE. Disclaimer : I haven't played at suicidal... yet!

Well, I had a great game going as Altarians. Large galaxy, which was the problem. I ran out of memory in the later middle-game. This was before 1.6a, so I'm sure it was because I had invaded too many planets and so had a huge memory leak.

I'm working on a Medium Altarian now, so hopefully that will go through.

In my current game (Drengin, 9 painful opponents, large map, all abundant, normal tech), I took speed +2 and econ +10 as my abilities. It's worked OK. This is my first painful game, and it's been tough, dealing with the higher aggression of the AIs. I've been able to keep it to no more that two fronts at a time (can barely keep up with that due to my economy never getting solidly off the ground). The main way I've done this is when a 3rd AI comes after me, I'm able to make peace at a profit with the weakest enemy I'm fighting.

Right now, I've got ~45% of the galaxy, influence-wise, and have the Terrans down to 7 planets left. No other opponents, though the Korath are now wary, and they have the second place empire in most all categories (behind me). Those spore ships scare me a bit, so I'm being careful. I have unilaterally offered them tribute a couple times in the last couple of months, hoping that will stave them off for a bit.

Something that I have noticed (having already researched Huge Hulls) is that if you have a huge hull'd ship, I only need like 5 of them to take on 7 opponents worth of Small and Medium ships. It makes me kinda sad but also very happy that my ships are worth their weight in pain. My "Uber-Transport" is going to have a lot of fun just running around and depositing 9 Billion shock troops on the surface on and enemy planet!

There will be death to all that oppose the Drengin!

That is a nice score, that will probab;ly move the Drengin into last place.

Thanks, guys. Looks like I've played everyone except the Altarians for this tournament. Might as well put one in for them. They're the easiest to play out of the group, so it shouldn't take too long.

@neilo - I know the feeling. We go on 12s for one or two weeks at a time about 4 to 5 times a year. Always goes through the weekends too. I hope yours goes as well as it can.
