Odd Race selection bug?

I just received, installed and updated to 1.4 (german) galcivII dread lords, and after some trying around and figuring out the controls, i decided i want to play a faction heavily using trade to their benefit.

i went into the start new game/select a race screen and chose the drath. on the next customization screen i found out, that you can reset the distributed points and so have 10 again, with some core abilities remaining untouched, amongst them +25 diplomacy, +50 spying etc.
i wanted to further increase diplomacy, so for some of my 10 points i chose +10 diplomacy. but now i did not have 35 dip, but 10 dip instead of the original 25. i thought this was some displaying bug and i would actually have 35dip. so i started a game to find out. i checked the game screen on this and still had only 10dip.
however, i was surprised when i left that game, considering it spoiled, to start anew. now the +25dip the drath usually had are permanently vanished, and theres nothing else there instead either.
restarting game and reinstalling patch don't help. i haven't tried reinstalling the game.

am i getting something wrong here, or is the player supposed to alter races permanently? i would like to pick up the drath with their default settings now, but they are gone. how can i undo this?

In GC2DL, selectable ability bonuses are not allowed to stack with 'natural' bonuses, so if you choose one, it will replace the natural bonus. Using the clear option should reset it, but if not, you can also delete the .raceconfig file for that race from My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2.
