updated the display drivers and also changed the prefs.ini as instructed in some of the threads here, but the game still freezes, funnily always at the same places.
It's likely you just haven't gotten drivers that are new enough--the most likely culprit of this problem was solved by nVidia in the 101.41 release dated March 14 (IIRC). Any drivers newer than those should fix the issue. If you have these already and are still having problems, please post the contents of your debug.err file.
I got a slower laptop, with only 512 memory, and playing DA without problems now. Mind you I never got past turn 20 yet but having a blast designing ships.
When I played on vista it took almost 10 minutes just to get the game to load to play. Now it takes only 2 or less minutes to load.
If you had Vista on that same laptop, personally I doubt any amount of patching will give you that much improvement in that situation--with only 512MB of ram, it's likely Vista is using all of it to start with. So the game has to run pretty much entirely in virtual memory (which would indeed make it VERY slow).
I am hearing talk about beta 1.6?? Does this have anything to do with
fixing the sluggish performance of GalCiv II on Vista?
The Vista-nVidia scrolling issue was solved some time ago in the 1.6 beta patches (Cari completely rewrote the minimap to work around the issue such configurations had with 2d drawing). Since then the graphic engine has also been overhauled with code ported back from our next game, bringing overall enhanced performance over the original release of DA and even of DL (my laptop with integrated Radeon 9000 actually runs DA noticeably faster than DL now!) for most configurations.
