Can't upload results to metaverse, serials don't match

I bought Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar Gold edition from Best Buy and I am not able to post my results to the metaverse. I am getting an error that the server is rejecting it because the serials do not match. This is not true. There was one serial included with the game. I typed it in, exactly as it appeared, both on my characters here and in my game and it isn't working.

I seem to be able to upload the results from a dread lords game but not a dark avatar game, looking at registration info, the serial that is recorded there is not my serial, it is a couple digits short of the length a serial is supposed to be.

Please contact [email protected]. You should receive an automated response shortly after you send the mail with your ticket number; if you don't, check your spam/bulk folders.

This has worked for several people now;

Re-register your game(s) in SDC with the original serial numbers you had, not those tht may come when you request SDC to 'remind' you.
Those serial numbers are different than your original ones, and they work in SDC but may cause this issue in the Metaverse.
If you don't have your original serial numbers, e-mail us at [email protected] and ask us to copy & paste your numbers from your Stardock.net account.

You should then re-paste the serials into your Metaverse character account, even if you see the same number appearing, paste it anyway. This step was necessary for one person.

Highlander, that final step, pasting serials into the metaverse account, is the one that's got me stuck - how do you change the serial of an existing character? I have no desire to create an entirely new character, but I don't see any option to change a character's serial.

EDIT: I just verified and I can definitely post a game against a new character, just not my default character. Clearly it's not an issue of my game serial being messed up somehow, so if I could just reset my character serial....
