Nebulaes: Safe Havens.

An idea.

Here's an idea to add strategy, make the galaxy more interesting (not to forget pretty) and be fitting

Nebulaes or Space clouds (so to speak) on the map.

The thing nebulaes brings to the game would then be something in the lines of:

Safe heavens for ships:
Nebulaes could emit radiation and such effects to force you to research "endurance" technologies to endure long stays in them, or perhaps to be allowed to even enter them in the first place without loosing you ships.
Perhaps they could have varying effects and varying "thicknesses".

Hiding places
Nebulaes could then also be used for launching Assaults or similar on passers by. Thus fulfilling the "forest" type of cover we see in land based games.

Creating Obstacles
An unpenetrable nebulae could even be used to force the players to take certain routes to go around it. In effect creating more interesting "maps" of the universe.
Thus bringing in the "mountains" element from land based games as well.

These land based comparisons are just for ... comparison, to clearer clarify the point of having the feature.

Anyway having a nebulae stretching half the map forcing all AI to take even more into account while it brings beauty, strategy and diversity <--- my salespitch.. would be neat.

This is actually somewhat of a repost I apologise for that, I posted this in a insanely huge thread somewhere in this forum. Then found "Game Ideas" which seems more fitting

Hmmmm... those are some ideas that appear in other games. Many ships slow down and lose sensor abilities. In Star Wars: Empire at War, nebulaes cause ships to lose shield power and special abilities.

I'm bumping this very old thread since this is an extraordinarily good idea. Think of the fun. Ship collisions might ensue! Getting chased and just evading into the nebula. Getting lost due to too low sensor ability. Finding marooned ships in the nebula.

Right now the nebula effect is just window dressing. Make it happen for game mechanics instead.

It would be cool if a nebula would have different effects on ships and starbases. Have a nebula that would raise/lower defense and raise/lower attacks. Plus you could have a nebula starbase that would manipulate the bonusses or degenerative properties to use against the enemy. Or even make it more interesting by having unique technologies associated with certain nebulas and the number of nebulas you own. For example: You have 1 nebula that destroys shield power. You can research shield deterioration level 1. If you own two you get level two and so forth.

Uhm... I liked this idea until JubJub's post. I don't have any ideas to offer, but I just wanted to say that those ideas are kind of bad, JubJub.

I like this idea. I think that one of the major flaws of GalCiv2, if not the biggest flaw, is its lack of "positional strategy". This game is all about crunching the numbers to your advantage, whether its in balancing your economy or designing ships, and there is simply no way around this. Personally, I've always played strategy games, such as Starcraft and Red Alert (granted those are RTS', but close enough) with the philosophy "get away with the most using the least". I feel more satisfied if I can find away to defeat the enemies with a small strike team rather than just charging down the enemy's door with twice as many guys as he has. But doing so requires positional strategy; using obstacles, etc, you all know what I'm talking about. GalCiv2, however, is about brute force, and little more. Nebulae, asteroids, stable wormholes, etc would all be great additions to this game, but all have been posted before; no indication that they are going to be included. Still, you have my vote.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to throw my lot with Fatman. Your idea, JubJub, would just be more number crunching.

The plural of nebula is nebulae, right? You don't need that extra "s" AFAIK.
