initial tech tree research?

I'm a complete newbie and I just bought GC2 a couple days ago. I've been playing it a bit but I am wondering if there is any decent starting out strategy for what to initially research during the first parts of a new game?

it depends on map sieze and other game options.

I like researching in this following order... universal translator, diplomacy, trade.

Once i have done that, then i use trade to swap with the AI for other techs. And depending on how that goes, my tech tree can go in any direction after that.

oh wait, your playing DA right? sorry, but i hear tech trading with the AI has been severely nerfed. I am still playing DL.
