GalCiv II Dreadlords crashes when I try to go into Options or start new game

Game crashes to desktop when I hit option menu button. It also crashes to desktop when I try to start a new game. It loads for a bit and then crashes to desktop. Music gets 1 or 2 "hiccups" while loading.

Debuf file after I tried to use option menu:

Your audio drivers are very old, and there are newer ones available at soundblaster.com.

The driver you should download and install is:
Sound Blaster Live! - LiveDrvUni-Pack (English) (23.32 MB) 28 Feb 03

it can be found here:
WWW Link

Can you post the debug from after trying to start a game too?
Reply #3 Top
When I try to update my SB Live drivers the thing crashes giving me a "could not call remote function" (more or less) error for which the fix is some mind numbing process. I think i'll just wait till I get a new comp in a few months since my comp is fairly old. However I've not had any problems related to my sound card with other games i've played like WoW etc. Is there some way to run the game with no sound at all and check if it works that way?

Also, here is the debug.err file after i try to start a new game.

Hmm, nothing obvious in either debug that I'm seeing.

Has the game worked for you prior to this?

A couple of things you can try:

Reinstall the game, and update to 1.5 using SDC.

Edit the file Prefs.ini in My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2, and set FullScreen= to 0 and Multisample= to 0.

Im getting the same problem. How do i debug so you can see.
Please go to C:\Program Files\Stardock\Totalgaming\GalCiv2 (or wherever you installed the game at), open the debug.err file you find there in notepad, and copy/paste the contents into a post here. If this is a DA report, you'll find the debug in C:\Program Files\Stardock\Totalgaming\GalCiv2\DarkAvatar instead. This will give us some technical information that can help troubleshoot your problem.

Be sure to copy the debug immediately after the error occurs; if you start the game again, the debug will be erased and recreated for the new session.

Note: If running on Vista with DA 1.6b2 or later, the debug.err is now located in My Documents\My Games\GC2DarkAvatar.

Physical Memory: 382MB RAM
Page File: 225MB used, 696MB available

You need to increase your swap file to at least 2GB.
More ram would really help, too.

Driver Version: 6.14.0010.6396
Driver Date: 11/15/2003 19:41:08

You need to update the video drivers, they are way too old for this game.

Current Display Mode: 1280 x 800 (32 bit) (60Hz)
Debug Message: Game Resolution: 1024 x 768

It might help, also, if you set the games resolution to your desktop resolution.
You can edit Prefs.ini (located in My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2) with Notepad.
Set these lines to read:

[Video]
DisplayWidth=1280
DisplayHeight=800
ColorDepth=32
Fullscreen=1

(sometimes Fullscreen=0 works better on some machines)
