1.6 Beta 4 on SDC

1.6 Beta 4 on SDC

change log:

The biggest change in this beta is the optimzation work done on the ships.  You should notice improved framerates and improved loading times (the optimizations also accelerated the creation of ship thumbnails).  We had a save game where the framerate droped to 4 fps when we scrolled over sectors with ships, and with these changes it's now up to 28-34 fps.  Major kudos to Jesse (aka CodeCritter) for all the work that he put into this!  For those of you who like a little more  technical details, Jesse implemented a batching system for the ships, optimized the meshes for speed, and optimized the storage of the scene nodes.  If you want to check out your framerate, CTRL+F toggles the framerate counter on/off.

+ NEW: Added Starbase module to repair the starbase with Tech Requirement Advanced Hulls.  Will only show up if the starbase is missing HP, and can be 'installed' multiple times.  This module should not count towards the total modules.

+ CHANGE:  In the Ship Designer, when using auto-place to place a component, the component will use the current scale and rotation settings

+ TWEAK: You are no longer permitted to change your capital to another world, and bonuses for the capital city have been increased.

+ FIX:  Flushes resource manager’s resources when game exits
+ FIX: Fixed crash in invasion ground units
+ FIX: Fixed crash if memory does not allocate in ResourceGraphic
+ FIX: Fixed crash in ship design code if hardpoint data failed to load
+ FIX: Fixed bug where minimaps were not refreshing immediately when you started a new game
+ FIX: Added code to handle if you or your trading partner are in debt to fix flakiness with the money popup in the TradeWnd.
+ FIX: Fixed bug in the function that calculates the morale of a colony to fix a longtime bug where your morale could permanently drop to 1%
+ FIX: Made it so that ships on the Governor minimap should show up larger when they are affected by the switch.  Also made starbases not show up on this minimap to reduce clutter.
+ FIX: Fixed typo in XML files that caused land and background textures in Invasion window to be black

UPDATE 5/21/07:  I am linking to a test build meant to address the memory issues, slowdown, and graphical glitches in this beta.  Please backup your existing GC2DarkAvatar.exe and Lib3D.dll files before extracting this zip file into your GalCiv2\DarkAvatar folder.  When making reports from this point forward, please be sure to state which version you are using.

UPDATE 5/22/07: I updated the link with a new test build that fixes the Governor screen lockup and makes the minimap stars bigger on Large and Gigantic galaxies so that they are more visible.

It might help if those of you getting the graphical glitch check the AMD website for updates; if downloading an update from AMD corrects it, we can just add that to the readme and knowledgebase.

No recent updates over at AMD as far as I could tell. I went there this morning to see if there was anything (at least for my processor which is an AMD Athlon 64 3800 single core ) but all there really is are downloads for linux versions and dual core processor updates, but again, these seemed a little 'old' and look pretty much the same as what I remember from some months ago. Again, there are a couple of new ones with regards to Linux systems, but this doesn't apply to me or probably the majority of other users. Hope this helps 'a little bit' there Cari... if you find anything out please be sure to let us know.

If the first test build was supposed to address the ship and starbase model corruption, the second test build didn't. Tried that out and still got model corruption.

I haven't tried going any further because it really ruins the experience if I can't design any ships from the start (I think I spend more time in the ship editor than I do playing the game, lol).

I have tested Beta 5 on two different computer systems.

1: An AMD 3800 64 dual processor, 1 meg memory with an nvidia 6000 series, shared memory video card. The latest drivers from AMD and Nvidia were loaded.
2: An intel 4, 3.2 Ghz, 1meg memory with a Radion 9250 video card. The latest drivers were loaded. It should be noted that this video card is not directx 9 compatible.

Results:

The AMD exibited graphics aborations. They seemed to eminate from the fill function of the rendering process since the did not appear on some modules until they were fitted to the hull. The aborations were not always at the same point from game to game. When the aboration did not cause a large spike, if you zoomed into the component you could see that the component was not fully filled in with color. The error may be cause by a 3D mathematical floating point error. But may also be cause by a memory leak or overwrite. The latter would be my best guess. Let me add that the AMD PC has far superior graphics quality than the intel PC. There is barely any wait between turns, and the ships just zoom accross the screen. A big improvement over the original Dark Avatar.

The intel PC did not exibit any graphic issues what so ever. But it was slowed down to one frame per second when zoomed in enough to display the ship details. This was not the case with the original Dark avatar. Since I recently purchased the AMD PC, I had played many games on the intel PC.

Hope this has been helpfull to the devs.

On an other note, You may be well advised to select a beta test group that you can rely on, then keep the emails of the tests offline to avoid upsetting those who do not understand the Beta test process. Furthermore, making the whole world your beta test department is much less productive then managing a small statisticlaly and technically significant beta test group. The public display of your tecnical failures tend to reduce your customer's confidence in your enginering capabilities and the perceived quality of your product.

frame rates was my only real beef about this game, i am now beefless.
great job on improving the game.

I'm avoiding the impulse to mention an advertisement from the 80's, by Wendy's burger chain, with a little old woman.
Those who are old enough to remember it need hear no more . . .

I checked the AMD site for new drivers earlier today before my post, and the newest drivers that they offer for the AMD Athlon 64 X2 are the ones that I already have installed. This is the first machine that I have ever had that was not an Intel system, and this is perhaps a reason to go back to an Intel based system in the future.

Also - the AMD drivers I am talking about date back to summer of 2006, so it doesn't look like AMD will be making new drivers anytime soon.

Well they already have a beta driver for the 7 series... I downloaded just today, but haven't installed it yet. Goes from 93.71 to 94. something. So, there is still support for the 7 series. Check out Nvidia's website and let me know if I'm wrong about this, but it's definitely worth checking out... it's a balloon ad for the beta, in the downloads area but not listed in the actual downloads.

The 94.24 driver is the latest, but it is still fairly old, which is what I was referring to.

You guys need to pay more attention to the download section of guru3d.com. The last driver version I used on my XP install a week ago was 97.73, and there are many more recent versions since that point.

Ran 1.6 beta5 test 2 for a couple hours with a 7800GTX and intel chip. Working very nicely.

Would still love to see something on the Civilization Manager screen, on the Colonies tab that would state what type the planet is (e.g. HeavyGravity, Toxic, Aquatic, etc.) and at what state it is at (0%, 50% or 100% production). Even if you just threw in the same icon as in the main planet screen and allowed us to hover over it to get a tooltip, that would be great. Would make it much easier for seeing what to research next, rather than going through every planet.

Well ironically we've got a solution but not an ideal solution.

If we update to the new DirectX SDK MS released, the problem is solved.

However, the new SDK doesn't support Windows 2000, ME, or 98.

Is ANYONE here running on Win2K, ME, or 98?

So Frogboy simply updating to the new Direct SDK MS will fix all the recent probs with Beta 4?

If that's the case I think that is more than an ideal solution. Because based on all the debug.err files posted I think a majority of the gamers play via XP & Vista.

I haven't seen any debugs recently with anything but XP and Vista myself, but I know there are a handful of people out there hanging on to 98.

You guys need to pay more attention to the download section of guru3d.com. The last driver version I used on my XP install a week ago was 97.73, and there are many more recent versions since that point.

Great - However, why doesn't nVidia's own website provide the most recent drivers for their own products? Secondly, how is your "average" computer user (who tries to be diligent about driver updates, but has better things to do in life) supposed to know about places like guru3d? (These are rhetorical questions - sort of a "why, oh why" - not a criticism of Pyrion.)

BTW Pyrion - Did you experience the "spike" graphical glitches? If so, did the nVidia driver update help?

Is ANYONE here running on Win2K, ME, or 98?

Not I - And I would be pleased if you did upgrade to the new SDK - "Spikes" Bedamned!

And if I haven't mentioned it recently - Stardock is great!

Forgot to add onto my previous reply...

Frogboy should we continue to use Test build #2 CariElf had put out today? Or use the originial Beta 4 version now available on SDC? Just curious!!!

Answer - I just downloaded the 97.73 driver from guru3d...although it is an official nVidia driver - it is not intended to support my GPU. The drivers at guru3d are modded drivers, so that they can run GPUs other than originally intended. Call me an overly cautious old fart, but I am not running the risk of using a modded driver. Just a caveat for others...

evil's tinkering continues: startup experiments, terran ships, zoomed in:

3 ships = 3.7fps
2 ships (miner, colony) = 4.5fps
2 ships (miner, survey) = 5.3fps
2 ships (survey, colony) = 7.1fps
1 ship (survey) = 16.0fps
1 ship (colony) = 10.4fps
1 ship (miner) = 7.0fps
no ships = 20.1 - 30.1fps

fyi

Forgive me if I'm pushing it, but does "the problem" include both the graphical issues some people are getting and the performance issues others (like myself) have?

I'm running XP, by the way.

I might be doing something wrong here but I just downloaded the latest DirectX SDK MS ver 9.18.944 (APR 07) 4/19/2007 and ran it with the beta version currently on SDC and still I see the graphical issues...

I then proceeded to install CariElf's Test build #2 and again still see the graphical flaws.

So Frogboy if I'm not downloading the current SDK that you mentioned, please go ahead and post a link to direct myself and maybe others as well to where we can find it?

- Thanks

P.S. Braddock8 reinforces my previous question... Is this an "overall fix" to the problems with Beta 4 or a "specific fix"?

NavyBert, Frogboy was talking about an update needs to be done on their side. We'll have to wait for another patch to get the benefits of it

OOPS thanks Braddock8, I'll just standby for more updates I guess.

The rally point manager lock-up is fixed with beta5-test 2 for me. FPS and everything else I've tested doing great. I'm now getting invisible ships attacking me sometimes. I didn't start a new game when updating from beta4 to beta5-2. Should I start a new one with each release? I'll send in the save & debug.

There's probably a lot more people that have AMD processors using XP than there are people who have Windows 2000, total... (or 95/98/ME) and I rather doubt anyone running an OS released 10 years ago is going to be making game purchases. For 50 bucks they could likely buy a machine with Windows XP on it.

I've experienced the memory leaks preventing saving, and the spike/poly problems, but the game runs very smoothly otherwise using Beta 4. I've updated to beta 5 but haven't had a chance to try it out yet, though I fully expect the polys to still be odd, hopefully I can save my games without crashing. The out of memory error is very strange indeed... I've got 4GB of ram and a very large virtual memory file (though it is managed by Vista, which I don't trust entirely).
