1.6 Beta 4 on SDC

change log:

The biggest change in this beta is the optimzation work done on the ships.  You should notice improved framerates and improved loading times (the optimizations also accelerated the creation of ship thumbnails).  We had a save game where the framerate droped to 4 fps when we scrolled over sectors with ships, and with these changes it's now up to 28-34 fps.  Major kudos to Jesse (aka CodeCritter) for all the work that he put into this!  For those of you who like a little more  technical details, Jesse implemented a batching system for the ships, optimized the meshes for speed, and optimized the storage of the scene nodes.  If you want to check out your framerate, CTRL+F toggles the framerate counter on/off.

+ NEW: Added Starbase module to repair the starbase with Tech Requirement Advanced Hulls.  Will only show up if the starbase is missing HP, and can be 'installed' multiple times.  This module should not count towards the total modules.

+ CHANGE:  In the Ship Designer, when using auto-place to place a component, the component will use the current scale and rotation settings

+ TWEAK: You are no longer permitted to change your capital to another world, and bonuses for the capital city have been increased.

+ FIX:  Flushes resource manager’s resources when game exits
+ FIX: Fixed crash in invasion ground units
+ FIX: Fixed crash if memory does not allocate in ResourceGraphic
+ FIX: Fixed crash in ship design code if hardpoint data failed to load
+ FIX: Fixed bug where minimaps were not refreshing immediately when you started a new game
+ FIX: Added code to handle if you or your trading partner are in debt to fix flakiness with the money popup in the TradeWnd. 
+ FIX: Fixed bug in the function that calculates the morale of a colony to fix a longtime bug where your morale could permanently drop to 1%
+ FIX: Made it so that ships on the Governor minimap should show up larger when they are affected by the switch.  Also made starbases not show up on this minimap to reduce clutter.
+ FIX: Fixed typo in XML files that caused land and background textures in Invasion window to be black

UPDATE 5/21/07:  I am linking to a test build meant to address the memory issues, slowdown, and graphical glitches in this beta.  Please backup your existing GC2DarkAvatar.exe and Lib3D.dll files before extracting this zip file into your GalCiv2\DarkAvatar folder.  When making reports from this point forward, please be sure to state which version you are using.

UPDATE 5/22/07: I updated the link with a new test build that fixes the Governor screen lockup and makes the minimap stars bigger on Large and Gigantic galaxies so that they are more visible.

For the time being, is it possible to revert back to beta 3? Does anyone have a copy of it or know where I can get it? Thanks.


If you have checked the box in Stardock Central marked 'Auto-archive on application update' then you should have a restorable archive of Beta 3. Choose 'Restore Archive' from the File menu and pick out the most recent archive.

I uninstalled Dark Avatar and then re-installed Beta 4 (five minutes ago). If there was any file corruption, that should have taken care of it. However, the same graphical oddity persists.

I just sent in my .sav, debug, and a few screenshots. Besides the graphics issue the new beta is running great   . I'm sure you guys will have that issue licked soon enough.

I'll try when I get home, although I had no issue with any of the other downloads (DA, DL, Multimedia, Tutorial...)



When I got home it had a message about there being a server issue and said installation failed, so I tried again. It worked!


or so I thought... Now I am getting a gc2launch has stopped working dialog box.

I'm going to uninstall and the reinstall and see if that fixes things.

I am having the ship model graphics issue as well. Reinstalled game and updated ati 9800 pro drivers still there.

Back with another update for you all

Removed Stardock and replaced it
Remove Game(S) GC and DA and replaced it
Removed graphic card ATI 9600 and replaced it added updated drivers
Changed around ship colors to see if that effected it found BLACK hulls and engines hides the spike effect a bit more
Found out do not click on download manager in Stardock lets the heightmap load and install

The spikes are still there, as is my positive glow at all the good changes in the beta and the community responce to this issue

I suggestion if I may, should the graphic problem posts be a seperate topic or sticky?

Very strange. My game is significantly slower now that I've installed beta 4. Given how old my video card is (Mobility Radeon 9000 64mb) it wasn't all that fast before, but now I'm getting <4 fps when I start a new game (meaning there are only three ships visible). These frame rates are similar to what I used to get with multiple fleets on screen. I've done a reinstall, with no improvement. I'll submit a debug.err.


I am in the same situation, the game is now unplayable in non-tactic mode. I get <4 fps too when there isn't a lot of ships on the map.
I will try to update my video drivers, but since my video card is getting old, I don't know if the legacy driver would help much. (Note : I know that my card is not fully DirectX9.0c compatible, since I can't get the ship textures.)

Oh, and I got hard freezes on the governor screen. But since the second time it happens I got a message talking about the driver malfunctioning, I'll check if updating the driver remove the problem first.

Ok, I "updated" my video drivers (I grabbed the latest one for my video card, which was actually an earlier version than the one I had before,...).

My framerate is still as bad (~4fps with 5/6 visible ships). When I went to the governor screen, it froze quite quickly. Also, the minimap on that screen was incomplete (it was only a little less than a 5x5, while the map was a medium).

Make sure you send in a copy of the game that is freezing.

For me, it was particular to the game, since a new game didn't freeze and appeared to work right. It might be hard for them to get examples of this one otherwise...

And save the game if you even think about going near the governors screen!

The crash report from Mikey said to check my drivers, but that's a moot point for us fiscal conservatives still runnning on "old" cards. I figured I was just taking my licks for emulating DirectX 9 instead of running it, but maybe there's a broader problem.

I've just bought and installed GC2 and DA on SDC (didnt have either before whatsoever), and I'm using this beta version from SDC. I have the same graphical corruption issue as some other people have been mentioning with ship models, both in the main map view and in the designer view. I've noticed it predominantly coming from the engine areas, large poly spikes which stick out randomly.

I'm running a GeForce 7900GT 512mb with 1GB of RAM, Athlon XP 3000 on WinXP Pro SP2.

That is the beta version. Version 1.60 would be reserved for the finished (post-beta) update. In-game you would see that the version is 1.60 beta 4 at the bottom left corner.

I'm a bit relieved to hear that I'm not the only one with an old-timey video card that's experiencing slowdown issues. GC2's ability to run well on low-end systems is what made me look into it in the first place, so with beta 4 I was afraid that Stardock had (paradoxically) made one performance improvement too far for my sad old system. Hopefully we can get a correction for beta 5.

Having played around with my slowed-down game a bit more, I noticed that slowdown only happens when ships and stations are on-screen. I get high fps's with planets, stars, and the like. Removing ship textures gives a bit of improvement, but not much - up to ~10 fps, still not as good as before.

I'll need to check the governors screen and see if I can induce a blue-screen-of-death. (There's something I never thought I'd try!)

When optimizing the ship meshes, did you remember to Weld the polygons? Reversed Normals or visa versa? Unwanted Displacement?

I have those odd planes and rods with the ships.

Xp Pro 64, Athlon 64 X2 5200+ (2 x 1 MB L2 cache), 4 GB DDR2 667, MSI NX7600GS 256 MB dual DVI, Acer X222W widescreen (at native resolution). DA is running in a window at 1600 x 900 (32 bit).

About the old video card slow down :
I got a situation with a fps ~20, with only one scout and some planets visible.
But when I scrolled a little to include a Thalan Freighter (a normal one, not a miniature), the fps dropped to ~5.

Ephafn, that's similar to what I'm seeing. One ship on screen gives playable (but nevertheless low) frame rates, but as soon as a second shows up, I drop back down to 4-5 fps.

My past experience has been that these things eventually come out in the wash, but I'm guessing that emulation will fail fundamentally at some point even for folks who turn off all the bling.

I don't think the debug will be useful for them either...Unless all our systems happen to have some shared hardware. Since a new game seems to work on my system, I suspect it's something in the saved game. So the saved game may be useful.

Thorfrog, That is the debug from DL, go into the Dark Avatar folder to get it's debug.
