how do I threaten another civ?

I'm playing my third game, now on a tougher level, and I keep getting threats from other civs and I want to know if I can do the same?

You cannot. I don't really consider it so much of a threat myself, as the AI telling you about things that are damaging your relations rather than just declaring war on you with no warning.

When you’re in a weak position they demand tribute, from your cheese eating monkey self. When you have got all the power they pay you "gifts" to your benevolent wise leadership. It is a random event but it depends on your comparative military rating as who pays and who recieves.

As far as actual tribute demands go, you *can* do that yourself if you're powerful enough. Just ask for a trade where they give you money for nothing.

Too bad they won't give you chicks for free. On the other hand, after seeing those aliens, I guess you'd really have to be in dire straits to want that.
