Two questions: asteriod mining and mods

These are probably newbie questions, but I would appreciate any help here.

1. Regarding asteroid mining, how exactly is this done? Do I move the mining ship over the asteroid and click build or something? Do I have to wait a certain number of turns etc.?

2. How do I upgrade the mining facility? Do I move a new mining ship there? I can't seem to improve mining the same way as with contstructors and special modules.

3. How exactly do we install mods? I am confused.

Thanks

When you move a miner onto an unoccupied astroid it should automatically start building a base. The first level takes 5 turns, IIRC.

You need to research the next level of mining tech, then you can send a mining ship back (or just set your miners to automatic and they'll upgrade them as technology allows).

It varies from mod to mod, each should include its own directions. For those that use the mods folder (GalCiv2\Mods or GalCiv2\DarkAvatar\Mods), you simply unzip them there and select them in-game.

Every now and then the miner won't automatically start, but there will be a button labeled "improve" along the left hand side of the central panel on the bottom of the screen. So long as the square is eligible for a mining improvement (better tech, or no mining station yet), then the ship will start to build the mine.

In the DA campaign you start each mission with 2 levels of asteroid mine already researched. However, if you set the miners to automatic they will flit about the galaxy only building level 1 mines. They seem to prefer to run 50 parsecs to an empty field than to upgrade the mine right next to them. In one game I found that I had to manually control them to get them to bring all the level 1 mines up to level 2 mines.

In another game I did notice some level 2 mines (+10 mp), so I can't figure out when the ai chooses to upgrade, and when it chooses to fly off to a fresh field.

If your miner has shut itself off of "automatic" improvement because it couldn't find anything else to improve, then you get the next level of tech, it's best to move the miner off of any asteroids before hitting "automate" again. If it's already on a base/asteroid, it will only give the option to "improve" that one, then will quit when it's done. But if it's not on anything, it will give the "automate" option and will go until it can't improve anything anymore.
