Race selection factors: Home system features

Race selection factors: Home system features

I've recently spent a deal of time testing some of the subtler aspects of each race's home system. Here are my conclusions.

With the the great increase in the impact of the terraforming techs in Dark Avatar, and the addition of asteroid mining to the game, the other features of each races home system have become more important in choosing your player race (especially when playing on lower abundance settings).

Some notes & caveats.

1) Data were derived empirically, (mostly from a reasonable number [50-200 trials] of tailored race-game starts), so the suggested percentage chances of particular outcomes are approximate, generally rounded to the nearest 5%.

2) The planet improvement potentials of SOME home system minor planets is clearly unique, since it is not always the same for planets of the same PQ (see Mars vs Kona vs Iconia V). Since I did not do extensive tests on minor planets NOT in home systems, it is not clear whether some of the other home system minors follow the same improvement pattern as random low PQ planets; HOWEVER, I suspect that they do (see the PQ3s below, and the other PQ4s).

3) Note that although the >PQ4 minor planets gain significantly less from terraforming techs than the PQ3s & PQ4s, and end up in final improvement actually SMALLER (in PQ) than the lower PQ worlds, this effect is somewhat made up for by bonus tiles. The home system PQ3s & PQ4s NEVER have bonus tiles; the >PQ4 home system minors have a very high (90%+) probability of 100-~900% (combined) tile bonuses of the various sorts. Again, I did not do the testing to check if this correlates with the usual occurance of bounus tiles among random minor planets.

4) There doesn't seem to be any correlation between particular races, or abilities (i.e., Luck), in the occurrance of galactic resources near home systems.

5) All home systems have 3 asteroid fields (even the Thalan - I thought it would make sense for the Bugs to have an extra, sense there is no minor planet, but nope.)
No (usable) home system minor planets have moons or rings.

6) For the sake of game initiation time across several hundred test starts, all sampling was done against tiny galaxies w/ all rare settings. The rare occurance of "no minor planet" for some home systems reflected in the table below may not occur with more abundant planet settings (except for the Thalans, who never have a minor planet).

Actually, in 2nd year there was this demo by one of the graduate groups where they "beamed" 10 lbs of sand from one end of the lab to a dimensional interface receptor at the other end, outside the interference range of the dematerializer/transmat rig. It was supposed to pop out again on a clear platform in the U. warehouse at the spaceport - but - (ahem) something must have bumped the settings before the official demo. It took about 3 days to get the solid silicon plug out of the S-bend in the Provost's toilet. (grin)

OK, I did some testing over the weekend.

1. Asteroid distribution in home systems appears to be NOT changed in the latest beta (1.6b3, aka 1.59[b].095). Still 3 appearing in each race's home system, despite what .xml file says. Cornhusker either got a VERY low probability setup, or a glitch, or an asteroid field that edged in from way left field off another system.

2. Interesting results when starting a race with PQ+ ability.
a) PQ+ calculations apparently round DOWN all the time, so PQ5,6,7,8,9 planets (at least in home sytems) do not show an extra tile when they are colonized. Too bad.
b) PQ+ is apparently always calculated off a planet's base PQ, before terraforming, throughout the game. This means that when terraforming brings those smaller planets up to PQ10, they STILL don't get an extra tile from the +10% to PQ.

Overall, this reduces the value of the PQ+ ability considerably, in combination with the way that DA changed the emphasis in terraforming from high PQ planets to low PQ.

Hey, kyro,
Could you check if the above 2 effects are unintended or by design?

How come I always get a +1 PQ, +1 tile for soil enhancement, habitat improvement, and terraforming? Isn't that the way its supposed to happen? I get extra tiles +PQ increases for some PQ1-4 worlds but never above 19 total. I thought that was whats supposed to happen all the time

I'm not quite sure what you are asking, so I'm going to try to cover all bets. Please forgive if it ends up sounding a bit pedantic; no condescencion (sp?) intended.

In DL, planets of base PQ>11 get 2 additional tiles per level of planetforming. Lesser PQ planets get 1 tile per level.

In DA, planets of base PQ>5 get 1 additional tile per level of planetforming; PQ5 get 1 or 2 per level, PQ4 get 3 or 4 per level (except Mars), PQ3 get 2, 3, or 5 tiles per level, I've never seen a PQ2, and PQ1 rocks get 6 additional tiles per level of planetforming tech.

When you take the Planet Quality ability, 10% or 20% is added to the base PQ of a planet after you colonize it. The planet will have as many usable tiles to start as the modified PQ. It appears from my experiments that fractions are rounded down, so that a PQ9 planet with PQ+10% ability = PQ 9.9 = (rounds to) PQ9, whereas a PQ10 planet with PQ+10% ability = PQ 11.0 = (rounds to) PQ11 and begins with 11 usable tiles (and the morale bonus for PQ>10).

However, it appears from my experimentation that the number of potential additional tiles from planetforming techs is NOT affected by the Planet Quality ability, in either DL or DA. Moreover, it appears that the Planet Quality bonus is NOT applied later, as the PQ rises from completed planetforming. In other words, a PQ3 world (in DA) will not show an extra tile from the Planet Quality ability because the 10% increase is not enough to make a full tile (PQ =3.3); further, when the PQ rises to PQ10 through Soil Enhancemnet / Habitat Improvement, the Planet Quality ability DOES NOT operate retroactively to raise the PQ to 11.

Hope that clarifies.

Is there a limit in PQ? In my last game I colonized a PQ27 world and got a special popup about sacrificing for +34% PQ. My world turned into a PQ36 and never changed, even after soil, habitat, and terraforming. I would still be playing except my save got corrupted and I started getting pop 100 worlds with a farm and food distribution network. (I later found out my problem with DA crashes/stability were due to using Disk keeper 10 Pro with a 500GB drive - it uses an algorythm that doesn't work with drives above 100GB.) I don't know if this was a symptom of my problem or a REAL game issue. My save kept locking up after 5 minutes so I was forced to start over. After discovering the cause of my instability I found that Disk Keeper would leave my last 1gb of files untouched no matter what settings I used. I uninstalled it and went back to windows - now everything is fine and all my files are defragmented. All my previous research my be tainted by this problem...

The highest DL PQ I have ever seen mentioned in the forums was, I believe, PQ46.

The highest DA PQ I have ever seen mentioned in the forums would be yours, unless that was DL. Other than that I think the highest DA world I've heard of was a PQ26.

Hi!
the highest DA world I've heard of was a PQ26.

That's by design and valid for ALL GalCiv games, from the original one on OS/2. Game generates planets up to class 26. Everything over it is generated by racial PQ bonus and various events.
