Terran Surprise Attack!

Wow!

In my most recent game of DA, I was on the recieving end of a surprise attack by the Terran aI! They actually declared war on me by attacking one of my planets! No warning, no 'I'm Declaring War on you foul Drathian pigs' announcement followed by 3 turns of inactivity...they just up and attacked me! Wayyyy COOL!

I've been waiting to see this behavior since GC2 came out - kudo's to Brad and team for improving the aI!

The great thing about it was my relations with the Terrams were warm...I had just put up an influence starbase that impacted two of their planets, trying to be 'sneaky' and flip a few worlds without combat...they reacted as I would have to this transgression...and tried to slap me down.

Fortunately, their ships were just a tad weaker than mine - it was touch and go for a few turns until I could concentrate my much smaller fleet in the area. I also made use of the Drath super ability and got two other aI's to declare war on the Terrans to buy some time...

This has to be one of the most interesting and enjoyable games of GC2 DA I've ever played.

(DA 1.6 beta 1; Medium Galaxy, 5 ai's, Complex algorythms enabled, Crippling level with all aI's set to genius.)

I had some such thing brewing in a DA game recently. The Torians put troop transports in striking range of my planets while they were still friendly. I got worried and put fleets around for defense. Their diplomacy with me then went quickly south, so I attacked their transports/escorts before they had the chance to strike. Still, they were definitely planning something sinister!

I got surprise attacked before, but the dumb AI attacked my 10B planet with 1B troops and lost.

Nice thing about the attack I suffered was that the Terrans were in a 6 month old War with the Carinoids - whose planet was deep in my Influence sphere. The Cari's had some tough ships - so the Terrans were constantly sending in ships to replace those the Cari's destroyed.

I was lulled to sleep so to speak - I got used to the Terran fleets in my space. Relations never went bad - they were Friendly when the Terrans bushwacked me. They did it the very next turn after I added a 25% Influence module to the Influence Starbase I had just built near tow of their planets.

They just sent one of their fleets to attack a lightly defended planet - destroyed two of the orbiting defenders I had there without warning.

The only thing that really saved my bacon was they never attacked my Influence Starbase or two Econ starbases that were all defensless and I had no fleets in range to protect them, being fairly early in the game - and all aI's were Friendly. Instead they sent their fleets against my planets - luckily I had enough cheap defenders in orbits to slow them down enough until my Fast Response Fleets arrived on the scene.

Losing the econ starbases would have really set me back - and the Influence one too, as it was also keeping several asteroid mines from defecting to the Torians.

So ... an A+ for the aI in launching a totally unexpected Surprise attack - but a D+ for ignoring the undefended Starbases - they had fleets right next to two of them, and very close to the third - instead they moved those fleets away from the defenseless bases toward the planet they intitially treid to attack - several weeks move away.

They could have really crippled me - but I survived.

Not to cast a downer on the occasion, but I suspect that this wasn't a case of a 'sneak attack', but rather an 'accidental attack'. Your planet happened to be on the way towards the Carinoids, so the fleet attacked it by accident.

No, it was not on the way at all...

In fact, I watched the Terran fleet back trak away from the Cari's to attack my planet.

In my experience I've never had an 'accidental' attack occur in the year plus I've been playing GC2.

No, Brad had said he was improving the aI's response to 'Influence' attacks in the latest beta - I'll stick with my view, thanks, not yours.

I've also been surprisingly attacked by the Yors in DA, no warning or threat or something, just BOOM. Our relations were not that good indeed. Yours were warm, so it's somehow unusual...but he, everything is possible

Hey--now that's a good idea! Building an influence starbase to protect your asteroids. Now there's a nice tip-you-will-seldom-use-but-it's-good-to-know.

I tried the influence starbase trick to save my asteroids, and all I got was the secret meeting mega-event - and a quick execution in my DA tough game.

Yes, in my most recent beta game, my neighbours the Korath parked a spore ship near every one of my planets. I'm not sure if that was a smart move, though... talk about telegraphing your intentions!

yeah but think about the actions they would have taken if u destroyed only one of those ships. hehehe. all ur planets destroyed.

Another DA beta 1 game. Terrans surprise-attacked me. We were at Warm the turn before, both at war with Yor, lots of trade between us, and both neutral. It really looks like they've chosen a "target of opportunity," because I had a great (22-class) planet in their sphere of influence with only 1 ship in orbit (transport), and I had no fleets anywhere near it for defense. Damn them! I went neutral just to buddy up to the ingrates. They shall pay, Oh they shall pay dearly!
