The next big game from Stardock is a real-time strategy game called Sins of a Solar Empire. It combines the best of 4X games with the benefits of real-time gaming.

Gamespot has a very thorough Q&A with Ironclad, the development team behind it.  Check it out!

Very cool. I'm actually kind of glad Sins doesn't come out til 2008, though -- otherwise I probably won't have a chance to play my other games first (including GC 2)!

GS: What was the inspiration for Sins? No one has really made a grand, real-time space strategy game like this before. After all, these games are usually turn based because they're so big.

Umm, is somebody forgetting about "Homeworld"? Hope Sins has just as compelling a storyline. Of course, Homeworld only placed you in command of one "faction" and it was so f---in hard that I just threw it in the dust bin in disgust. Here's to Sins going after an audience a bit wider than the hardcore RTS crowd or at least providing difficulty levels which scale really well.

Eh, while I enjoyed the story in Homeworld, it is much closer to a 3D RTS.

Hehe,

I'm playing it as I preordered the Beta (closed now, come back in a few months for the next beta). To me it feels like homeworld meets supreme commander.
The first beta has only the human faction, but it's fun.

To me its a rts. I don't buy the gimmick of a realtime 4x game. That feels like hyping the game as something new.

Nice graphics. Could be good or fantastic when finished. Keep a watchfull eye on it!

Homeworld is really not what I would call grand-scale, since everything takes place in a very small block of space without any colonization, empire management, etc.

those screen shots are beautiful. sounds like it'll be a good game. i especially liked what i read about diplomacy options.

You can pick anybody on the Sins forum and they will rip your head off for saying that, our pet hate is people comparing Sins to Homeworld since it has often been used in a derogatory fashion (which you didn't, good for you).

Oooh, it is not even released and it already has fanboys?

When originally hearing about this game, The Homeworld mention was what turned me off. Here lately though I have been taking a look at it. Seeing a video of actual gameplay peaked my interest more. I'll be keeping an eye on this one, maybe even try for a beta spot next time it opens up.

I loved Homeworld...still do. From what little I have heard of SOASE so far, it sounds interesting; but I am not the type to insist every new game be exactly like some other game I like either. (It's one of the biggest gripes I have against Starcraft fans, seeing as most games since it have just been clones and I never really liked it to begin with.)

Who knows, by the time it comes out I may have found the time to play the newest batch of games I currently have collecting dust.

Hmmm...I've never noticed that there ARE any benefits to so-called "Real Time" Strategy (ain't that a confusing phrase!) gaming.

Now, pausable continuous action makes some sense, mainly because it saves play time; and 'real time' for a TACTICAL game/situation fits the appropritate decision cycle (though most gamers might think of that level of games as 'squad based shooters'). However, RTS as usually implemented has always struck me as nothing but an extremely artificial way to force the player into making boneheaded mistakes due to highly unrealistic time pressure, thereby reducing the need for 'smart' AI.

Homeworld always felt like it had a large enough "map" to allow time for thought. In the heat of battle things sped up, but by then if you didn't have the strategically appropriate units you were already screwed tactically.

The only time I even noticed the maps had boundaries were when I captured all the enemy ion frigates in one of the last levels and tried to warp out to the next level. For those not in the know, or that can't recall, all your ships had to assume "parade" formation...it was wider than the map.

IF this game uses the Kohan resource system, or a reasonable variant of it, I'll have to give it a try. I hate peons/resource collectors.

Sounds crap,
"gamer will spend most of his time guiding fleets from planet to planet" - how exciting

Well when it will be ready we will see but from about 6-7 games of this style I tried only "Homeworld" was OK but even there it was a problem to control all at once.

Greetings Fraktards,

It is indeed possible to have realtime 4x and do it well. Lookup Imperium Galactica II for historical reference. IG2 never reached its full potential because of a shiat publisher. It was a game that was very much ahead of its time.

Knowing that Stardock has a good understanding of the games of Christmas past, I'm confident that they know about IG2 and will make Sins even better (i.e. city != planet.)

Looking forward to it from the great developers. As for the rest of you, die already.

Peace.

No, but they're definitely forgetting about Haegemonia : Legions of Iron. The two sound very similar (even down to the three factions ).
Not that I'd complain if was similar to Haegemonia, it's still one of my favourite games of all time.

Homeworld was a great game that i played but it was a scenario based game. Done one scenario on to the next. After i completed the scenarios at hardest levels the game was obsolete, always seemed to me that there was only 1 way to defeat the comp, couldnt take different option to play the game.

Medieval II total war makes good use of turn based and rts, where you play a turn based campaign but when u come up against another army the fight is rts ,controlling 1000's of men at once(really need powerful comp to reduce lag).

I loved Homeworld 2, and it did have an enormous scale, although that was somewhat diluted by the non-linear scaling that defaulted to on.

I'm also an avid fan of the Civilization series.

I just love strategy games. Real time or Turn based, I don't care as long as it's fun .

And it looks like Sins may be a winner, and another one to add to my already large collection of strategy games .

Is it possible to have too many strategy games?

I do have a question, though: It says it will have DirectX 9.0c support. Any plans to take advantage of DirectX 10 if it's available? I have Windows Vista, and a GeForce 8800 is definitely on my wish list .

And oh, yeah, a couple more things: First, is it possible to move anywhere in 3D space? Also, will the 3D movement system be intuitive and easy? One of Homeworld's strengths is easily its very intuitive movement system.

I bought the pre-order last night for those who have played Galactic Civilzation 2 this game is no way as fun as that game.

For 1 in this pre-release beta you can't design ships, secondly there is a group of ships that are called pirates and they are basically attacking you 3 seconds into the game.

The environment looks nothing like space it looks like your over the ocean on a cloudy day fighting constantly like the gayness that Homeworld brought.

The Graphics however other then that effect of fighting in the clouds are very nice i like the fact that you can zoom out and see galaxies. But realisticly there are more then 3 galaxies in the universe there are trillions of them, so far in this game there are only 3 and that is in a large map.

Reasons to fight? why is everyone constantly trying to kill each other I don't get it. United states went to war with Iraq because they thought they were building taco bells underground and they were afraid they'd be to much competitions for the ones in america.

A good reason to fight lol Iraq was going to destroy americas economy.

If I had a wish i'd wish that this game was in every aspect GalCiv 2 with the graphics of sin solar system.
