New invasion tactics.

when you just want to kill your enemy...

Ok, first I wanted this post to be simply about having the option of destroying a planet with my fleet. Instead I think I will discuss it and a few other ideas on how to deal with enemy planets.

1. Total destruction of a planet - This one is pretty self explanitory. On larger maps I get tired of having to send troop transports to get rid of my enemies... frankly when you are dealing with hundreds of planets, the amount of transports and troops you need is just mind boggling. The way this technique would work would add a option for your fleet when they attack a planet to destroy it. If they had enough fire power, or the right technology, they could simply obliterate the planet and everything on it. The effect could be similar to the random event that turns a planet into an asteroid field.

2. Extermination squads - Again brought about by my annoyance of killing off hundreds of worlds. I'm tired of having to build 1 transport and disposable army to take over each planet. What this would allow you to do is create a troop transport and army that could be re-used. It would act just like a normal land battle except after the fight is over (and hopefully you won), the colony is totally destroyed and the remaining forces are loaded back into your transports to be moved to another planet.

3. Planetary bombardment - Tired of having your fleet just sit idle over an enemy planet because they can't do anything to it? Well with this they could, it would work similar to the total destruction proposed in number one, but would simply demolish the planet to the point of uselessness. Gives you another option to skip having to bring along a troop transport.

Huh? space age technology is too primative to be capable of destroying a delicate planitary ecosystem.

Since we are presently capable of destroying this planet with nukes if we so choose, we must therefore be more advanced than any of the races in Galciv right???

I do find it erksome to lose atleast one of my transports during an invasion. Extermination Squads would be more aptly names 'Stormtroopers.' Because I'm sure there's more than a squad of them Perhaps they would destory all improvements, kill everyone, and leave the planet free for colonization? Sounds good to me.

Hi!

My first advice: don't play huge and gigantic maps. Second advice: play as Korath.

I agree that we should be able to bombard from space - perhaps targeting specific improvements.

In Civilization 3, you were able to bombard a city and you would either reduce its population, destroy an improvement, or have no affect (randomly chosen). (I liked this better than what they have in Civilization 4, actually).

I think space borne ships should be able to bombard planets if they have the right type of weaponry installed. Perhaps a size-20 module for standard bombardment, or even a size 100 module for total planetary destruction (ala Death Star).

Good ideas. I think that you should be able to at least target and destroy planetary improvements from space. It makes sense that if you can target and destroy armed space craft from far away you should be able to target and destroy a defenseless building from just out of planetary orbit. A consequence of such a destruction could be that some of the population is reduced.
As far as transports are concerned, I start producing them as soon as I am able. I launch them when the producing planet's population nears its cap. They don't cost anything to maintain if you use a cargo hull design. When someone decides they should declare war I have a bunch of handy troop transports laying around and no need for a production shift.
But if they never do any of the things suggested above, there's always Korath clan and their spore ships.

Oh boy... this question and "new ideas" were asked so many times in the past, I can't even name it.

So many people said "Hey, let's make something like the Death Star!" or "A Module of a space station that will destroy a planet" or even "We want the Terror Star!"

But people, that's not what GC2 devs care about, at least for now. Just be happy there are Asteroid Star Bases in DA, which is really cool!

#1 and #3 should go in the planetary bomoardment thread. They have been discussed many, many times.

Option #2, however, is quite interesting. I'd add a kicker, the planet can then be colonized again by a colony ship, so leaving it in your wake could have drawbacks.

The PlanetQualityPenalty being set to 100 should drop the quality to 0, just as the improvement penalty should destroy all improvements...

I think, in theory, that should work...

It still burns up a transport though... And you somehow manage to take the planet over..

EDIT: had to take out all of the arrows (Less than, greater than) for the forums...

Unless you use Information Warfare and lose fewer troops than you convert, you'll always lose at least one transport (and even then you may still, I'm not sure if that 'loophole' still exists).

If you just want to get rid of the planet, you can conquer it then abandon it and it'll drop to class 0, but there's not really any way to take over a planet militarily without losing a transport or spore ship.

Cant you go to the summary or details sceen of the colony you just took, and use the

"Destroy colony" option? Then you dont have to own and care for a newly

taken colony....
