Krynn not using their special ability?

I have become convinced that the AI isn't using their spies effectively, and I have noticed that the Krynn don't seem to use their special ability at all.

I started a game where it was just me and the Krynn and 2 minor nations.

I wanted to see if the Krynn would actually use their spies.

I also set the relations to "friendly" rather than "unknown" to make sure that we have quick contact and thus giving the Krynn a good chance to use their spies on me.

The Krynn never once in the entire game put a spy on me.

When I finally got some spies I put them on the Krynn planet and the Krynn did not nullify my spy for several weeks.

I know the Krynn start with 1 spy. Why didn't they use it on me? Why didn't the Krynn use this spy to nullify my spy?

Anyway, I just thought you might want to look into this.

The use of spies depends on where you are in the game and the AI’s financial position. If they are weak then I see very few spies. Generally I only seem them in mid game and later.

In my last few games I get bucketloads of spies, and am spending 13% of my economy to get rid of them (!!!). In my current game (Painful, custom Breeder – documented as an AAR) I am barely able to keep ahead, and the only races left in the game are Krynn, Altarians, and Drath (all of whom are ‘close, but spy on me anyway).

Overall, the Krynn super ability doesn’t seem very useful: 1 spy at the beginning, ability to spend 50% of your income on spies (!!!), free anti-espionage facility at start. That said, the Krynn are great fun to play. They are tailor made to be Good due to their 50% defensive bonus. Combine that with Good defensive bonus and you’re set! Their high morale lets you set taxes to an obscenely high level, and their other stats are good.

Krynn are great overall (great stats!) but their SuperPower is lacking.

Each Superpower should be balanced with the others.

Compare for example Super Annihilator, Super Breeder with Super Spy.

Not quite the same impact in the game.

All superpowers should be good.
