Trade is on the tech tree in one of the diplomatic branches. Hit the "more" button at the bottom of the research screen, then look for the yellow techs. You will find trade and what needs to be researched as a precursor.

Good luck.

To get trade you need:
Xeno Communication >>
Universal Translator >>
Diplomatic Relations >>
Trade

You can start to access the diplomacy screen after you research Universal Translator. You can start to build freighters after you research Trade. Some races already start with a few of these techs, so just start at whatever point in this path that you need to.

Hope that helps.

Hi!

If you're playing a campaign, there are some limitations to the tech tree. "Trade" tech could be affected.

But if you just want to exchange stuff, you need to find other races, and talk to them. BTW you can't talk to Dread Lords.

Nor can you trade with races you're at war with, knowing the Dread Lords, you're probably at war with them!

.......I'm not completely retarded, but i guess there are limitations because diplomatic relations doesnt come after universal translator...so i guess ill never trade

If you are in the campaign, it might be temporarily locked out for a few scenarios, as Iztok said. If you are not in the campaign, please realize that diplomatic relations is actually a branch that appears on a lower yellow colored tree. Universal translators goes to interstellar governments within that specific tree, but there should be a line connecting translators with the first step in the diplomacy tree.

Hope that helps.
