It's in the right spot, yes. Try making a ship that's stronger against the pirates. EXAMPLE: 100defence to lasers 0 defence to missiles and 700 defence to mass drivers, you'd choose to research missiles. Also, try sacrificing the speed for more firepower, because the pirates usually try to find your ships.

You're probably hit by the "off-type defence bug". If that's the case you need more attack power in your fleet than their single ship has defenses, regardless if they have wrong defenses on their ships. Can you be more specific with pirates' ships configuration, and your ships? I mean cumulative attack and defense they have, and yours too.

In case of pirates I've been successfull with all-attack large and hige ships, but in my case it was easy: I've been playing as evil Drengin and had access to Psionc beam.

Also, try making large fleets with both small and large ships, and try upgrading your logistics points, minimization (I think that's what it's called) and try defending against them, like if they use lasers use shields and so on. I hope you get everything straightened out, and good luck.

Make your attack and defence more specific to counter the pirates, miniturisation and logistics will up your fleet values.
(Sorry Lukas-just repeating you here   )

Good luck with the game and reinstalling

I have had good luck with medium-hull, all attack ships in groups of 3 or more. I will usually lose all of the 1st 2 or 3 fleets, but by picking off 1 pirate ship at a time, my 4th fleet will mop the floor with those scurvy dogs, arrrrgh.

Try being a non-terran race, some have bonuses in minaturization, and learn how to set your industry ratings for optimal performance. I like having my industry run at 100 percent, for example, with 80 percent into tech research and ten percent into military and social but it usually requires constant tweaking. Also watch out for trade research - it triggers pirates if you have your events enable. Also experiement with different choices for your civilization bonuses, government, and ethical standing. I perfer the war party but its not critical. When pirates appear in my games they are in small amounts of ships initially and increase each couple of turns (depending on my tech level) and turn progression. I always have a single fleet designated for hunting pirates. You need to develope a research plan that capitalizes on your civilization's particular bonuses... I hope this helps

One further comment.

I have have very good success with a tiny hull 1 point laser damage, 2 MK6 Hyper Warp engines, and 2 ultimate invulnerability, 2 aeron missle defense, 2 zero-point armor. I owned 2 military resources fully developed, and my race was the one with 25% minaturization (can't remeber the name). My society was neutral, my government was a star federation, and my political party was the war party. I had all my bonuses in ships weapons and defense. I discovered that even at an attack of 1 point I was able to destroy 9 out of a fleet of 11 pirates on the offense. Defense doesn't exist practically because the number of ships can destroy any amount of defense on the attack. Understand that each attacking ship fires additional times for each movement point that it possesses, however, defending ships don't shoot as many times. While I could survive an attack against a larger fleet and successfully destroy or impair larger pirate fleets, I always died when attacked. My inexpensive design and neutral ethics made buying replacements a breeze.
