Is Ligos a scam?

I thought I would start playing Thief 1 again, as I never finished it. I got too scared at the Return to the Cathedral!!!

Anyway, I had played it on the computer before that I'm trying to play it on now, but now it says that I have to subscribe to a corporation called Ligos. What the H*** is this about?!!!

I've done nothing to upgrade this computer but what Microsoft sends in now and then. So does Microsoft have some sort of deal with this corporation?

Has anyone heard of this company called Ligos? How could there be anything legitimate about this? Why would they want $30 from me to play a game I already bought and have played before on this same computer?


I sent Ligos a couple of messages, via email and phone, but, not surprisingly, no one has responded for a couple of days. This looks to me like quite the scam, cloaked under the hood of a "legitimate" corporation. At this point I'd say that Ligos is just a front for a scam against those who play older computer games, or run older software.

If I'm wrong, please tell me so.

No disrespect, but of course.


But they want to charge me $30 to get this codec to run Thief, which I've run on this computer before without it. And the program won't run without it at this point. So that's why I'm thinking that Microsoft must have some deal with them. Which would be totally absurd, because I could run this game on this machine in the past. How could this kind of sheit be legal?

Judging from the site they work with intel.

Google also churned out that they charged people varying prices for the codes :/

So yeah, doesn't LOOK like a scam, but does look like a rear end move.

Video codecs originally developed by Intel, but later taken over by Ligos. Used widely throughout many years. Latests versions provide good picture quality and many different bit rates.


Not quite sure how it suddenly popped up but that would partly explain the sudden price-charging.

So you might be able to get round it (block all access for thief to the internet?) other than that, just attempt to get the older drivers, ligos are apparently "upgraded".

Marcathonas, thanks for the idea of blocking internet access.


But I really can't understand how you can't admit this is a scam! A rear end move is better than a scam? Is that your point? Please explain the difference.

I'll try blocking, but I shouldn't have to do so. I'm trying to discover who is at fault for the scam of trying to charge people to play a game they've already played before on their computer. These people have done nothing to improve the game. They're just trying to make money on a scam.

That's an interesting find Mac. I have a couple of older games I remember use the Indeo player. If I can remember which ones I'll try to start them up and see if I get anything similar.

DethAdder, I reinstalled the game. So if you doh't have to do so, then this problem might not show up.

Needless to say, I did not go forward with playing the game, because I would not pay a corporation $30 to play it, when I've already bought it.

I guess this shows how awesome Stardock is with their system. If I'd uninstalled GCII, I could reinstall it without this kind of difficulty.


So somebody please inform me as to how Ligos isn't a scam company!!!!

From what you say, This may not technically be a "scam" but it is definitely blatant Exploitation and Profiteering, Almost to the point of extortion.

I don't know whether Indeo is installed separately, (If that is the software being charged for) If so, you might get away with just blocking that access to the internet. Either way surely your user license for whatever should be covered in the original price for the game, To come back now and try and charge you is a disgrace and deserves the uttermost contempt from users.

So somebody please inform me as to how Ligos isn't a scam company!!!!


I wouldn't know how. I hope you get this issue resolved.

Tell them to bleed some other fool as you're not paying twice.
