Isn't reseach too fast ?

I'm mostly playing medium galaxy game, with 5 AI on the latest difficulty level.
I set reseach to "very slow".
My games last about 5 hours, wich I like (for some reason, even though I love big maps in civilizations, I can't stand them in gal civ).
My tech level into the game (the number of bc spent on it, shown at the top of the research screen) is less than 4500.

And yet, after these 5 hours of game, every branch of the tech tree is done except weapons (i'm usually at 75% of it) and technology victory (I stop after the latest one that gives a new improvement).

Is it just me, or is it really *too* fast ? I mean, on a gigantic game, on when you don't play with very slow, it would take really less time to complete it ...

The Technologies go fast as well depending how many Research Labs you have and how you allocate you're people on the planet if you put the sources in research that will cause you to research faster as well..

Does tech speed change with galaxy size? Playing on huge with normal tech speed I'm lucky to have filled out most branches after 10 hours.

Hi!
Does tech speed change with galaxy size?

Yes, at least in DL. The larger galaxy, the costlier is the researh. But the huge and gigantic have the same settings.

Ugh, my current medium / all common / slowest tech maso game is at turn 182, I'm playing it for the fourth evening/night (~12 hours alltogether) and not even a third of the tech tree is researched. We're fighting with Harpoons, Singularity drivers and Lasers...

IMO the slowest tech gives me a big advantage.

Yay. I'm playing a huge/gigantic (I forgot) and I'm well into the game (a month or two). I got 55-60 planets and the longest I have to wait for research is 16 weeks. It's a combo of what research facilitys you got and how many planets you have. I'm not even focusing on research at all becuase I'm a "just plow'um up" kind of guy.

The most fun I have had as far as tech research and how fast it happens is by playing on a gigantic map with rare stars, common planets and abundent habitable. then making research very slow and turning off tech trading. (I also have 8 minor races for the fun of it)

With just under 10 planets in my empire and no way to trade techs I now have to research everything and that does slow down how fast you go through the tech tree.

After a full day of playing and with an event that shared three techs between all of the major races, I was only up to singularity weapons as the most advanced weapons.

if you really want to slow down tech research, play on a huge+ galaxy and make planets, etc., set to rare. you can turn up the number of players and/or minors to make the effect even more pronounced (fewer available planets with costlier research).

or if you'd prefer to mod, you could just double or triple (or whatever) the costs of every tech.

yuck! This is why I prefer medium galaxies. I just set everything to abundant settings and it feels like their is plenty to do with planets, anomolies, etc. (which are everywhere). I can finish each game in a night or two, and I probably get maybe 50% through the tech tree before I commit everything to destroying everyone (100% military spending once I think my research advantage in weapons and defenses is high enough).

A thing I noticed: I think the AIs are easier if you turn tech trading off. I enjoy having tech trading off, but I do think it makes the AIs easier. On normal games, I notice the AI definetely favors planet colonization techs. With abundant settings, their are plenty of planets available where you don't need to research planet colonization techs. I usually grab all those planets that I can, develop them, and then commit to mass destruction with superior ships and spore ships. The AI wastes time going after the expensive planet colonization techs which I don't even bother with, and I just steal their planets from them and gain those techs anyway through conquest.

I think with abundant settings, researching planet colonization techs is a waste unless you really have no other choice. Let the AI waste time and effort researching and colonizing those planets for you, and then steal them from the AI since you have researched superior weapons, defenses, and factories while they have wasted time colonizing the worlds that require research.

On less than abundant settings, perhaps there are fewer "normal" habitable planets that don't require colonization techs? Does anyone know??

Try gigantic.

Try gigantic.

Tell me exactly why you say that.
