Annoying Galactic Privateer Bug

Silly AI... Commerce Raiding won't work on me...

I am playing a 1.50X.072 game. I have Galactic Privateer. All the AIs but one ganged up on me. Every turn I have to sit through 3-5 minutes of each AI sending each of his nearby ships after my eleven freighters (sometimes more than once per ship). I can't pan around the map, because it keeps focusing me on the (non-existant) "battle." Apparently, the AIs aren't getting the message (literally and figuratively) about GP! I mean, it DOES tie up their ships, but I don't feel this is good behavior for the AI in general.

This has been noted many times, once in fact in a post I started. It's odd that they don't do something about this. I find that it makes the privateer practically off limits to the player, and the AI doesn't build it, so they might as well fix it or nix it. It also makes the Korx much less inviting as a race for a player to play.

Those at Stardock: Is this on any fix list? It would be one of my first choices as things for the "next update". I love the privateer, if it works right.

Yeah, it's annoying. They keep sending all their fleets after your freighters, which leaves far less fleets that you actually have to fight against while attacking them. But it is annoying that you have to wait so long for the turn to end.

It may be a matter of how the AI is programmed... It probably has some kind of routine that prioritizes targets based on the current situation rather than having scripted target lists. Such a system could be harder to update. This could explain why the AI tends to ignore asteroid mining bases... Maybe. Stardock?

As a result of my utter ignorance of programming, I would think it wouldn't be too hard to set the AI not to attack any trade vessel that's protected by Privateer. It must be a tough thing, though, or else I guess they'd have fixed it long ago.

I think you are giving them too much credit. There are lots of little things like this wrong with the game that they simply don't care to fix, IMHO.

StarDock has put a lot of its eggs in the customer service and value-for-money (as the British might say) baskets. They spend a lot of time listening to what players have to say, and trying to make the game work. There is, however, a LOT to do, and a lot to fix, in a VERY complex program. I am quite sure that the GP bug is a relatively low priority, because the game DOES still, work, and it is only a problem when you HAVE GP and are also at war. So, yeah, a bug like the FOW bug will get higher priority. But longstanding bugs, even ones that are just annoying will cost users in the long run. So I bet it is on their list.

OK. I'm just annoyed that it's been so long and we still have to say it must be on their list. It's a major part of one of the race's Super Abilities (Korx). It slows down the game immensely when it's not working right. But it's a great idea.

If it's really hard to program, then I understand the problem. But if it's not, then it's just a matter of not enough people speaking up. I'm sure the Korx are one of the least popular races for people to play. However, anyone can get GP, so it should be fixed, and that quickly.

And what is really annoying is that this is at least the third thread on this topic in the last few months, but no one official has commented on it. I'd just like to see some acknowledgement that this is an issue.

Love the game, though, so I'm not trying to be a pest. It's just that this problem is a pest in itself!!!!

I have seen the AI build it in DL.

To fix the AI you would have to put a conditional modifier on the target priority list linked to the privateer being built. Then the hard part would be linking the modified target priority to the race that built the privateer.

The Thalans just built the Privateer in my DA game. This bug is annoying and has been around for a while, so hopefully it will get fixed.

Probably the reason the AI fails to build GP in my games is that I build it first. I think of it as a priority because I think of trade as a priority, because I think of diplo as a priority, because I don't want to be a straight military power. Isn't that what this was designed for?

It's funny that I actually got it as the Korath at one point. I used diplo and trade to put everyone else at rest until I was ready to spore their ARSES to HEELLL.

So it's a powerful tool, if used right.

But it's too bad that it's not working right at this point.

In some other thread (I don't have time to look it up now) Frogboy made a comment about this bug and said it's not an "AI" bug per se but a "target selection" bug or something along those lines. In any case, he did seem momentarily aware of the problem. I don't know if that means they're going to resolve it any time soon. Has anyone reported the bug to the official bug-report e-mail address?

Good point. I never have posted it as a bug to an email address. I just assumed that because it comes up reported frequently on this board, people would see it.

But I'd be shocked if no one has posted it ever. It's been around since DL, after all.

Besides, everyone gets it!!!

Just build Galactic Privateer, then go to war with anyone. You've got it!

Ok, so should we al report it to the bug address and spam them? SHould one of us do it? Let's talk strategy.

I think one of us needs to email them. I would do it, but I don't have a current saved game where it's happening right now. If someone has one, please send it to the bug reports email address.

I just saw a statement by Frogboy that we should definitely email about a bug, because they often don't see issues just because they come up on the forum.

If nobody replies that they'll send an email by tomorrow, then I'll send one.

Anyone have a savegame with this problem?

Here's the prompt reply I received from support:

"Thank you for the information, I have forwarded this up to the Development staff and hopefully they can consider this issue for a bug fix in the future."

So, I guess we can lay off with the whining for awhile!
