Farming revamp idea

As it stands, farming punishes the player. having high tech farms, more than 1 farm, or a farm built on a bonus tile makes the population so large as to be unmanageable. Most of the stratagies revolve around simply not investing in farming.

My solution is simple- Each factory reduces the popuklation max by 500million, representing labor and pollution.

Not a bad idea.

Another idea might be to make the +farming tiles give +1/+2/+3 MT Food instead of a percentage, which would be very easy to impliment, I think.

I'd prefer to see typical max population of planets (before ridiculous amounts of +morale are needed) scale more with PQ instead of being a magic number (currently 19B I think).

Lower quality planets should have morale problems at lower population levels than high PQ worlds, and if you have a fat PQ planet it might be able to go high enough to make multiple farms or a farm tile useful without morale problems.

I'd revise the system this way:
Planetary Total Output, a new term. It defines the persentage of available industry/influence/research based on the population/planet quality. PTO of 100% is attainable if you have 2B people for every 3PQ. A maximum PTO of 120% is attainable, in which the planet gains a 20% bonus to industry/research/influence. The PQ is also applied as a Morale bonus, and if the PTO is 90% or better, an added bonus is applied, equal to PTO - 90.
Would make much more sense, atleast in my mind. Would make the AI more powerful, since it is already farm-crazy and morale-starved, and woul stop people from building the stinking all-factory(pun intended) worlds.

No doubt farms aren't really much of a factor in the game, compared to other building types. They're pretty much just another line in the techtree. They should be more needed, that's for sure. Problem is, the way the econ system (and the whole game, which is heavily based on it) is built, any change to anything involving pop might bring the whole thing down.

Each factory reduces the popuklation max by 500million

While this is a very good idea, I don't think it is really a solution. Not without other (more profound) changes.

I'd prefer to see typical max population of planets (before ridiculous amounts of +morale are needed) scale more with PQ instead of being a magic number (currently 19B I think).

Right. And with this, make average PQs higher (so you can have more tiles for the farms), and low PQ planets not increase in quality so much with enhancement techs.

This game desperately needs a logical approach to things...
