Whats a mega event?

I have the option unchecked for mega events... I Don't want "game destabilizing" events while im still learning the game... isnt the event where a race discovers a ranger (many many levels above everyone else), or better yet, the one where a race discovers an artifact that slowly makes them stronger, forcing you to try to get everyone to declare war on them, um, game destabilizing?

The ranger generally isn't destabilizing. It's too slow, and by the time they turn up it'd be unusual not to be able to build something that can best them. While the artifact one might be destabilizing, it's so slow as to be essentially irrelevant. I've never seen the target of that event do anything in my games, actually, other than suck and die.

Actually, I've seen the Altarians score a Lucky Ranger on a planet near my territory very early on in the game. I think it had only been a year or so after staring the map, so as you can imagine, my weapons were still kinda low-end and they ended up declaring war on me due to my alignment a few turns later, so I wouldn't exactly say that the "Ship Finding" event isn't dangerous...

Both the events mentioned are random events that are also in DL and not the mega events of DA. The one with the ranger really depends on when someone gets it. Early game it can be a force, but later it's pretty useless. The artifact one is so slow in developing I just ignore it now, since I will have removed the race before it becomes a factor.

In my current game, I got the "Ultra Drive" event for the first time. All ships have there speed increased by 50%! Makes me feel like I'm playing DL again, with all my ships zipping across the map. It's 2229 and the Drengin have Phasors IV, but still haven't researched a single engine tech, go figure.

all three times the ranger showed up was a time when nobody had anywhere near the tech to best it. in one game I had two, and was able to rampage at will with single rangers going wherever they pleased...

A good example of a mega event would be the Jaged Knife event. having planets from all of the major races rebel and form a new minor race of multiple planets can be bad if you happen to lose a planet that had a major building on it.

Its still not that bad since its still only a minor race and will not be overly agressive compaired to the major races.

Are you patched up to the latest? I thought they'd fixed the early ranger problem. I've never seen one turn up early enough in a game to have the sort of impact described in DA.

im running 1.5 DA out of the box. Whats the current version?

-As an aside, it would be better if they put a direct url for update downloads instead of a second program altogether, but thats just MO.
