Spying on the Dread Lords

What is the purpose?

I was playing through campaign (slowly) and I am at the point where I have a spy on every tile of each of the dread lords' planets and I was wondering if I am completely wasting my time with them.

If I am stopping them from producing ships, good. If not, then those agents are likely a waste.
If I can steal technologies, great! I haven't yet and if I cannot (due to a game restriction) then the agents are likely a waste.

I have the highest spy level on them and have nothing to show for it and I can really think of other uses for those dozen-or-so spies (like the Korath).

Input appreciated.

You're stopping them from producing ships, like you said. Also, I have indeed stolen techs from them from time to time. I think you're doing the right thing.

As long as they are doing something. I know the Dread Lords do not operate by the same game mechanics as all the other races so I want to make CERTAIN that the spying I am doing works like it does with everyone else and those spies are not just twiddling their thumbs hanging out in the Dread Lords bases.

An odd thought.

Just what would keep the DL's from eating your spies, and how do they go unnoticed by such a powerful foe? I've spied on the DL's before, never stolen any tech and never had a spy neutralized. I think I eventually just relocated the spy to a normal race where I immediately (almost anyway) stole some tech.

stoping them producing ships is a good idea. from wat iv heard and seen. there ships r way out of the league of anything you or i can build in a single ship.

iv only ever seen one of there ships. there out of my life support range and i send my Ion watchers (my custom races fast scout) but only got a glimps of them. but they r indeed very powerful. im yet 2 fight one but the GNN tells me they r ripping the Terrans a new one.

From what I've seen playing two games, blanketing the DL's planet with spies the moment the DL event occurs appears to shut them down...few, if any, DL ships are produced and the DL's are basically rendered impotent. In the second game, the DL's asked for peace and I extracted some high-end weapons from them, but I left the spies in place. I think its a game-play design bug.
