Supreme Commander

For those of you who got Supreme commander to work alright. How do you all like it? I think it rocks, and its a good change of pace form Galciv 2 DA which is also awesome. Sometimes you just feel like quick destruction.

Yes supreme commander is an excellent game I love it. It sets an example of how effective combined arms warfare is with the nice selection of land, air and sea units.

I'd love to play it, but it lags to death on my system (because while I meet the sysreqs, I dont have a dual core processor. )

Yeah, preordered it, waste of money unless you have a dual-core processor, which I don't.

Even if you have a dual-core processor the game lags. It's one of those that will fly on a quad-core or higher, but otherwise the sysreqs are just too goddamn high to be worth it.

Upgrading to 2gb ram this week though in the off-chance it actually helps things. I doubt it though.

I have two GB of ram and a 7950 SLI setup, but only a 64bit AMD core, and I drop out at three players worth of units.

Every. single. unit. has it's own AI code to excecute, so in a game with multiple players building say, 200 units each... it utterly demolishes current hardware.

Iceciro,
SLI won't help in SupComm anyway. A multicore CPU, good single graphics card, and 2 or more GB of RAM are the important components. What is your single-core CPU?

Pyrion,
The extra RAM may be just what you need, what are your CPU and video card specs? A really good single core may run SupComm acceptably...also, the devs are looking to make more optimizations in upcoming patches so that may help. From what I have heard, they concentrated on stability more than efficiency in getting it out the door to the publisher, and now they are looking to make the code efficient and streamlined. So if the hardware upgrade doesn't help, you may wanna try again after the next patch in a month. (I myself haven't had hardly any time to play since the beta ended, though I have had the game for weeks; but my system is a 4400X2 with a 7900GT KO video card and 2GB of good PC3200, plus I don't play much multiplayer, so my system was good enough even during the beta.)

I've got 1.5 gigs of DDR RAM, an Athlon '3500+' 64-bit processor (approximately 2.2 ghz, single-core), and a Radeon X800 XL (AGP) with 256 megs of memory. I say all this in the belief that my system really isn't up to date for a desktop PC built strictly for gaming, but I =am= able to run Supreme Commander. I've played through two of the campaigns and a half dozen skirmish matches and I'd say it's always ran pretty servicably.

That said, I never have more than five players in a CPU skirmish including me. When everything gets built up there is definite lag, and the game clock almost runs at half-speed. Queuing things up works fine but sometimes it seems to miss my clicks, and units will start to respond to orders in a slow, haphazard manner. That's when there's just way too many units in the game and I'm playing against several CPU opponents however.

I've also got the graphics set somewhere below 'medium', but not totally minimum. Supreme Commander could definitely do a lot more if I had a better machine, but it works, that's the point of my post.

I believe supreme commander is the next generation 'Total anihilation'.

I remember When total annihilation was first released, there were few systems that could run it smoothly.

I have total anihilation set to 200 units and 10 opponents... no problem on todays systems, so i dunno what they did to supreme comander to make it so power hungry?

As I stated - Every single unit in supreme commander runs it's own AI code. There is LUA coding for the PROJECTILES in Supreme Commander.

I've got an Athlon 64 3500+, for the interested party. I can run a one on one game alright, and never had any issues with the swarms of units in the demo - but the full game is dooooom. Even late in a 1v1 I get lag in the full game - it's like the full is less optimized than the demo was.

For now, I just play TA:Spring - I dunno if I'm allowed to link webpages on here but you can google it. It's basically Total Anhilation in 3d with a new engine, for free. It actually looks better than SupCom if you have to run SupCom on low settings anyways (for anyone that hasnt seen SupCom on low, it looks like MS Paint.) TA Spring is a really nice alternative to SupCom, as it uses the same principles but doesn't tear into your processor. I'm playing it until I get my dual core, lol - Supreme Commander isnt worth the stress on my pc at this point.

Sorry for my ignorance but is that different to how TA works?

Thanks for the tip, i havn't heard of that one! Yes there are an exceptional amount of mods available for TA.... just a sign of how brilliant a game it is.

For just that reason i upgraded my processor from a AMD Athlon 4200+(Dual [email protected])
to a AMD Opteron 185 (dual [email protected] overclocked to 2.8ghz). And O'boy was there a differance, where once i would give orders and nothing would happen to some of the most intense gaming i've had i a while. GREAT GAME!!!

I love supcom it works on my laptop which is more than I can say for Galciv 2.

SupComm is certain one of my favorite RTSs. It's big, fun and explody but still requires a lot of strategy and concentration.

I have a 3.2 Ghz single core and I can play 1v1 and campaign with little to no problems and 2v2 with slowdown only during the largest battles. Anything bigger just asplodes though.
