no one wants to get close

I STILL have not been able to form an alliance. I asked about this a little while ago and was told that i needed to be "close" with another civ and of course both have the alliance tech. Well i can not seem to get better than "friendly", i've given 50-100 bc every couple of turns just to see what will happen , and nothing. What gives?

I'm playing DL and there were ony two other civs (one was destroyed early on). Does the number of opponents make a difference? like maybe to make it harder to get a Diplomatic victory since id only have to do it twice.

Now theres only one left and im 9 turns away from an influence victory. i don't supposed they'll want to get close now.

Nope, relations deteriorate quite a bit when you're about to win. I have that same problem in never being able to get relations close.

IIRC giving gifts will only get you up to Friendly, but not past it. To get close you should have lots of trade routes, preferably the same alignment, and try to eliminate any things that are causing minuses in the relations screen.

AND... have a superior military will go a long way. Also, if you had bad relations with them once, it's very hard to get it right. If from the start you are a friendly guy with a big military everybody wants to be your friend in no time.

Lots of trade routes, big military, good diplo (those techs are invaluable), and maintaining good relations throughout the game (that is, don't have a war with them) should really get you there easily.

Maybe you should try a different deodorant or soap. If Ugly is your problem, maybe some cosmetic surgery to make yourself just a tad better. No one should go thru life without being close to someone.

Before the last patch, I played a game as a neutral faction with the super diplomat ability. In the four years of that game I was never at war with anyone and slowly ammassed the biggest military in the galaxy. I had trade routes with all of the other factions. At the end I was able to ally with everyone, including the Drengin and the Altarians.

With the way diplomacy has been downgraded in the latest patch, and with the increased level of aggression of AIs toward human players, I don't know if this type of game is even possible anymore, though.

well i have all 12 trade routes with them, im nuetral, they became good i think (jerks, lol). we were never at war, they did go to war for me once. Maybe i just waited too long to build up my military. while there were still 3 civs left i went from third to first in a couple of turns. I beat the "yellow" race completely and lost only 2 ships. So i don't know why i havent been able to get them to change.

i'm trying to get close with the Alterians (the human looking guys), if race makes a difference.

as a side note i was just thinking about that war... does the AI ever ask for peace? i mean the surrendered to me when they still had like 4 planets left,,, just like no shipd to defend them though.

Sometimes you'll get a request for peace in a message like this:

"It seems like this war was a mistake on our part. Lets put this behind us."

Sometimes they say that its hampering their other plans. But yes, sometimes they do ask for peace.

Hi!
Well i can not seem to get better than "friendly"

I remember some end-games where I was the leading one in allmost every category, but some races just didn't want to get their relations to "close". Esp. with Humans I have such experience: no "minuses", a dozen of "pluses", all trade, giving them tech and PLANETS, to no avail. Now I just exterminate them. Silly apes!

Indeed it will. One game I played where I wasn't in first (don't remember exactly how the rankings fell), I got peace with everyone and just focused my research on weapons. Little while later, I build a few huge ships filled completely with doom rays, and put them in orbit of the spin control center. The next turn, everyone was close
